I am a clinical psychologist in private practice and I am so glad to have followed up a recommendation to read this book. I believe it needs to be part of the Clinical Psychology Masters degree. This very informative and well-written book describes the organic disorders which can be easily mistaken for psychological symptoms, ranging from psychosis to anxiety and depression, and to eating disorders. I am rethinking my clients who have not responded well to psychotherapy. I greatly valued learning about the range of possible adverse psychological side-effects of psychoactive medications on their own and with other substances. The book is written in a way that makes the complexity of these issues able to be understood. There are may case studies which illuminate the symptoms and causes and there are scenarios to test your comprehension. I will need to reread this book again to lock these issues into memory but fortunately it is available referance. I thoroughly recommend it.

Easy to read and but not an in-depth diagnostic manual This is a book any mental health practitioner should read to increase their awareness of misdiagnosis and the reason they can be easily mislead. After reading this you will definitely have a desire to ask more question before thinking you have the answer.

This is an excellent resource. I supervise interns and licensed therapists and use this book as a training manual. Many times clients share their symptoms (psychological or physical) in great detail with therapists. If the counselor is aware of how a physical condition can manifest psychiatrically, they can be more competent therapists and help point a client in the direction of medical help for medical problems. One of the first tell-tale signs of a potential physical/medical condition is SUDDEN ONSET OF PSYCHIATRIC SYMPTOMS with no past history of these symptoms. Clients should always have a thorough medical assessment when this occurs. Even in gradual onset I encourage clients to have medical check-ups. One patient with severe depression was found to have severe sleep apnea, another with hypothyroidism. Ruling out medical conditions should almost be the first line of treatment! This book is fantastic for alerting the clinician to what may be medical versus psychological. I believe every counseling university should utilize a copy of this book for its future therapists. Although therapists should never diagnose outside their scope of practice, the best counselors are alert to the difference between medical and mental health conditions. This book is a very valuable resource!!

Every few pages has a paragraph that begins something along the lines of “Not long ago I was invited to the five-star Balmoral Hotel in Edinborough to present to a gathering of capital managers and their wealthiest clients”, or “At the end of my opening lecture in my 1998 course in global health...”, or “I was lecturing at Karolinska Institutet...”, or “There I had spent two days using my hands to diagnose hundreds of patients with a terrible, un-explained disease [MUST HAVE BEEN A VERY BUSY TWO DAYS!]...”, or “The first time I lectured to the staff of the world bank, I told them [AND IF I’M LECTURING THE WORLD BANK, THEN I MUST BE REALLY SMART AND HAVE REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF TO SAY!]...”After reading this tedious book that could be summarized in a couple of charts, or 17” TED talk, I think if I were seated next to Hans Rosling on an airplane [FIRST CLASS, OF COURSE!], I’d be searching for an empty seat in tourist class, next to the bathrooms. Or a parachute. Or maybe just jump.

I bought this book after seeing Bill Gates recommendation, and I have been really enjoying it. It goes a long way towards explaining human cognitive behavior in the face of today's "us vs. them" social media environment, as well as more historical cases where people just have a really hard time accepting the fact that things are almost always better than they think they are, and the extremes are much rarer than most people would guess.It ought to be required reading at the high school level IMHO.It's very well written and readable (the author is famous for his Ted talks on the subject). He really wants to help everyone understand and learn how to better evaluate what they hear about the world.A couple notes: you can download a whole chapter of the book from Bill Gates web site if you want to read more of it in advance. The Kindle version is currently broken on some devices (at least my Chromebook running the Android Kindle app) where it won't render any page contents properly unless you tap to zoom out to the page browsing mode where it does look correct.

Hans Rosling explains how media bias, ideological preconceptions and statistical illiteracy makes most people (in rich countries) believe in a gloomy and spectacularly wrong worldview. The book carefully explains by data and vivid examples how positive developments are systematically underreported, while disaster news are vastly over-reported. Rosling categorise the 10 most important sources of bias and misconceptions as well as explaining strategies on how to avoid them.This book is a treasure trove of evidence based reasoning, global statistics and myth busting! I read it just after finishing Steven Pinker's Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress. These books have a lot in common, both in goal and tone, but I enjoyed Rosling's book much more.Unless you have watched Roslings famous lectures (available on TED and Youtube), this book will forever change the way you understand global health, demography and development.

I read Steve Pinker’s Enlightenment Now prior to reading Factfulness, primarily because I got Pinker's book first. But I’m glad that it happened that way. Though I enjoyed Enlightenment Now, I think Factfulness drives home the same message that our world is truly making positive progress, but with such gripping real world observations that it almost reads more like Dr. Hans Rosling’s memoir.Dr. Rosling’s stories of working as a medical doctor in some of the countries that many Westerners would lump under the stereotype of an impoverished “Third World” are as real as it gets. His stories from the field illustrate the devastating results that our ignorance and biases can create. But others so clearly show the progress we, as a species, have made as a result of our better understanding of the facts.I would definitely recommend reading both Enlightenment Now, for a more academic and research-based perspective, and Factfulness, for its memorable stories that drive home the need for fact-based thinking.

I am very happy that inexpensive versions of Leaves of Grass are available again. I have purchased eight different versions to compare. Many are very poorly put together - almost like scanned versions simply plopped into a word processor and uploaded to Amazon - and selling for $10 - $1. What I find most fascinating is this one - by Martino Fine Books (listed as Leaves of Grass ; {exact Facsimile of the 1855 Edition] - it is very fine, and is an exact facsimile. I love holding it and looking at it as close to the original 1855 edition as humanly possible. The only caveat is the cover - which features the older Walt, who had published six more versions by the time the cover photo was taken. No matter, the inside is what's important. Another one I bought that I recommend is from cholla needles press (listed as Leaves of Grass: 1855) - they use a facsimile of the original cover, and have made the choice to clean up the line breaks for readability purposes. The cholla edition is easy to sit down and read, the martino edition is beautiful to look at. The good news is I bought them both for less than $10 and find that reasonable enough to give them both to friends and relatives as gifts this year.

Kindle Buyer Beware! If you think you are buying the Library of America edition (which links to this Kindle version on the Amazon page) you are not. This is a completely different version. If you are looking, specifically, for the First Edition (1855) of Leaves of Grass - which is given prominence of place in the Library of America edition -- you will not find it here. As for the rest of the material, it may well be fine but it is NOT the Library of America -- a series renowned for its editorial care. It is, in fact, published by Heritage Illustrated Publishing from materials in the public domain. No essay by Justin Kaplan, no page numbers, and notably ugly typesetting. There are better Kindle general editions of Whitman's poetry for less (Bantam Classics, for instance). Amazon misleads its customers by putting this generic edition on the same page as the scholar-worthy Library version of which it claims to be a reproduction.

This review is only for the Wisehouse Classics edition. There are a number of typographical errors within the book. For instance, the word "of" is exchanged for the word "or" a number of times in "Song of Myself," altering the meaning of certain lines significantly.It's extremely unfortunate that Amazon has combined the reviews for so many different editions of this and other books. While they may sell more books, it makes it very difficult for customers to find a good edition to buy, and it makes me much less likely to buy from Amazon in the future.

I am torn on my reaction to Whitman's magnum opus-- its themes and words will remain unforgettable, but boy how I hated reading this plodding rambling slog of a book.Whitman's poems catalog his transcendentalism-inspired view of... everything. From scenes across the world, with particular focus on America, to anecdotes of dying soldiers and copulating couples, Whitman emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity and nature.While Whitman's enthusiasm is infectious, he lacks brevity. He repeats his philosophy like a club over the head. The final product could've been cut in half and still have gotten across the message.But darn if there aren't moments of beauty. Particularly in the later poems which were added in his later years, Whitman tempers his enthusiasm with more brief, succinct, thoughtful, and hopeful words in the face of impending death. And I think that is the best occasion for Whitman's leaves: when one needs comfort that there is indestructible purpose and beauty in every human's life.

This is the one to buy when you want everything Walt Whitman had published as "Leaves of Grass." So many versions -- including, I'm sorry to say, the expensive leather-clad "heirloom" editions -- leave out the homoerotic 'Calamus' book and so many other instances of sexuality that they emerge less than half the full page count.

Except for school and college, classical poetry is dead. Poetry mutated into pop lyrics and is the teritory of the pop star or rapper. Nobel prize for literature goes to Bob Dylan, testifying to this metamorphosis. Reading classical poetry not for a credit or a paper is weird. Writing poetry review is even weirder. And writing a review of an indisputable genius, is much much weirder! In a way, reviewing Whitman is a bit like reviewing the Bible. What can one say about the American national icon? All that said, here it is...It is the first time that I read most of the Leaves Of Grass and not just the few chosen poems, or even just a few lines. And I must admit that I get rather tired reading very long poems, or poem cycles, so I do skip a few pages here and there. Moreover, the ever repeated paeans to America the Great or The States as a light unto nations strike to day as corny and pretentious. And lets not forget the language - antiquated, often odd syntax, words long out of circulation. And yet, counting everything in, FIVE STARS galore!!! What is amazing about Whitman is his tireless energy, zest for life, and above all, his inveterate optimism. This is a man born not long after the War of Independence and saw the terrible ravages of the Civil War (1.4 million dead out of 70 million population! WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam seem like games compared to that carnage), saw slavery, saw the Indian genocide, saw toil, hunger, sickness, and yet happily sung the glories of the Body Electric and heard America Singing. Whitman loved everybody - men, women, young, old, white, black, healthy, sick, good or evil, cities, bridges, plants, animals, stars. Some of his enthusiasm is way not PC in our present age - praising the soldier, the hunter, the butcher, the conquerer (ergo the rapist) of nature. In my opinion, Whitman is a giant and a giant he will remain in spite of the PC hordes.
