Review

"Polakow-Suransky, a fellow with the Open Society Foundations and a former opinion editor at the New York Times, has reported from across the globe for this book, providing dispatches from refugee camps and interviewing politicians, activists and immigrants on all sides of this debate. He captures social and political transformations in simple, memorable lines."―Washington Post"[Sasha Polakow-Suransky] has produced something badly needed in the English language [...] this book's strength is its window into Europe's voices, past and present, and the links the author finds between them."―Globe & Mail"Polakow-Suransky is a steady and sober tour guide... the cumulative impact of his reporting is distressing. After reading his book, it's still possible to imagine a better future for the planet, but it's not nearly as easy... Go Back to Where You Came From is a cautionary tale focused on Europe, it also serves as a reminder of future challenges that we will face across the globe, as millions of climate refugees will be forced to move into new countries."―The San Francisco Chronicle"A well-researched and authoritatively written analysis that resists easy answers and generalizations regarding the complex problems of immigration... Not an apologia for resistance to immigration but rather a nuanced, important analysis of an issue fraught with complications."―Kirkus, Starred Review"A sobering view on the effect and extent of right-wing radicalism in liberal democracies for those interested in the recent rise of right-wing populism."―Library Journal"Sasha Polakow-Suransky confronts deep tensions between race, class, and borders that so many liberals would prefer to ignore, with detailed examples from Europe, the United States, and South Africa. For those of us deeply worried about the future of liberal democracy, Go Back to Where You Came From is an important and enlightening book."―Anne-Marie Slaughter, president and CEO, New America, former director of Policy Planning, US state department 2009-2011"Sasha Polakow-Suransky's superb new book unpacks the story, taking readers through a changing Europe bursting with promise yet racked by conflict. With its deep reportage, gripping prose, and powerful message, [Go Back to Where You Came From is] a must-read for anyone trying to understand global politics today-and tomorrow."―Gideon Rose, editor, Foreign Affairs"The West has been taken over by a moral panic over immigrants that threatens to found a new fascism. Sasha Polakow-Suransky's new book is a fine antidote against this motivated menace."―Yanis Varoufakis, former finance minister of Greece and author of And the Weak Suffer What They Must?"An important, deeply reported investigation that helps us understand the rise of the extreme right across the globe and a warning of how it threatens Western democracies. A must-read for all concerned citizens."―Paul Mason, author of Postcapitalism"Go Back to Where You Came From offers a brilliant, bracing survey of the global immigration wars, from the working-class suburbs of Europe to the slums of South Africa to refugee camps in the South Pacific. Those who reject Sasha Polakow-Suransky's conclusions, as I do, must nevertheless reckon with this powerful book."―Reihan Salam, executive editor, National Review

This is an important and timely book. It doesn't fall into the easy categories of left or right and asks tough questions about immigration policy in Europe and the United States. The author isn't afraid to call out today's fearmongering politicians on the right but he is also critical of leftists who pretend there are no problems. The book covers a lot of territory, gives insights into several European countries, the USA, Australia and even South Africa where xenophobia is widespread. Regardless of your political views, this is a book that will challenge you to think and rethink your views about refugees, immigration and the threats faced by western liberal democracies. Read it.

Sasha Polakow-Suransky provides a powerful narrative history of public and political backlash against immigration. ‘Many of theworld’s most advanced democracies,’ writes Polakow-Suransky, ‘are effectively hitting the self- destruct button rather than take on new passengers.’ Over the span of two years, Polakow-Suransky travels across eight different countries to conduct over 120 interviews with individuals ranging from politicians and activists on the far right to refugees held in immigration detention centres. While the book provides insight into the politics and policies surrounding issues of immigration, Polakow-Suransky’s primary focus is on how backlash against immigrants and refugees can erode political systems within long-standing, advanced democracies. An absolute must-read for students interested in migration and border studies.

This is an important and timely book.Polakow-Suransky offers a comprehensive and sweeping report on the rise of nationalist, alt-right politics, from Australia to the US. He delves into the origins of these movements as well as their current manifestations of blatant islamophobia. He sheds light in particular on the consequences for refugees and other immigrant populations. It's a fascinating, well - researched read, written in a very engaging style, that I will be going back to over and over.Highly recommend.

This is a masterful book (and a great read) that chronicles the rise of anti-immigrant politics in Europe in the voice of many of those leading the charge, from national political leaders to local mayors to key intellectual influences. The author does an important job of injecting nuance into the debate by letting their voices speak, while also pointing to the deep contradictions these ideas pose for these countries and their sense of national identity. This book is essential reading for any concerned about immigration policy or social inclusion — not just in Europe but in the United States and around the world. He does justice to the fears that many people are facing as their societies change around them, while also pointing out the ways that embracing real differences as a result of immigration can lead to a stronger society and better future.

Phenomenal work- I think most Europeans who read this will deride this as a skewed American perspective, but that's really what they need to hear at this point- regardless, he demonstrates how his thesis is valid in Europe, South Africa, and the US. All politicians, particularly around the center, need to read and understand this text; my fear is that in 20-50 years when it's too late we'll look back at this book as a prescient warning of things to come.

This was the most uptodate account of the political dynamics currently influencing a large part of the developed world. The details and verifiable date describing the atmosphere with regard to refugee and immigration influences in Europe, the US, S. Africa and Australia were very enlightening. This book should be required reading in any Political Science study.

good synopsis

Stop whatever it is you're doing and buy this book immediately. For starters, the book could not be more timely: it's about the backlash to immigration, from the Netherlands to France to South Africa to Australia and beyond. He touches on so many themes—race, class, ideology, nationalism, economics, power, and much much more.I must say that the book is simply a pleasure to read. The author takes us on a fascinating historical and intellectual tour, and he introduces us to an eclectic cast of contemporary characters. (I'm still thinking about some of them!) Polakow-Suransky is a keen-eyed reporter, and a graceful writer. Finally, I should add that conservatives, liberals, and centrists will all enjoy this book—something that's quite rare these days. The author is consistently fair and non-ideological; his arguments will provoke people across the political spectrum. Whatever you thought about immigration and xenophobia, this book will make you rethink it.

#69,833 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was surprised that this book has been around for so long. But it is an interesting look at possible futures. It is one of the only books where I quickly adapted to the lack of gender pronouns - it is usually very disruptive to my reading. The story was often not a happy one, but despite the fantasy element, it seemed all too plausible.I have some limited experience with the mental health care system - and I sadly found that much of the description of that system still rings true. How quick we are to judge and diminish others. At times I was quite angry: for example, at one point a patient is restrained in the bed and her pleas to use the bathroom are ignored, but later the orderly says "they just pee all over themselves and they don't even care."I do recommend this book. It is an interesting story, and makes a number of points. It doesn't bang you too hard on the head to make them, either.

I first read this book shortly after it was published and just finished re-reading it. I never forgot it and was curious as to how well it held up after all these decades. Still an excellent, absorbing read. I was struck by Piercy's vivid depiction of the rough justice doled out to poor people of color--an issue clearly still very much with us. The author was eerily prescient in anticipating progressive trends that have come to the fore in recent decades, including sustainability, locavore, low-on-the-food-chain eating, intelligent energy use, even the rising interest in 'tiny houses' and small intentional communities. Perhaps even more remarkable and somewhat chilling are her evocations of less positive trends such as 24/7 in-home access to violent and degrading 'entertainment' and the wrist-worn 'kenners' on which people are so dependent that they literally cannot function without them--smartphones, anyone? I was intrigued to discover that even the utopian future that Connie visits is far from perfect--her new friends have enlightened values but are still struggling with dark aspects of human nature. I had remembered it much more rosily and appreciated anew the complexity of the society she evoked. I was saddened and shocked by the book's ending; I had also remembered that completely differently--that Connie somehow is able to join Luciente and her other friends in Massapoiset for good at the last minute. I am still struggling with whether it was all 'real' (within the speculative fiction universe, of course) or a portrait of a rich mind in extreme duress--or if the whole elaborate, multifaceted story is really, as some readers have suggested, meant to be read as a metaphor for the issues facing humanity. In any event, it continues to haunt me and provides rich food for thought. Ms. Piercy, you are an amazing writer--would you consider a sequel?

I tried several times, each time starting afresh, to get my head around the characters and the story, but I just couldn't get into the book. The tone is flat and the caricature style irritating. The introduction to this (2016) edition, written by Pierce, seems somewhat of a vain justification of her work.

WOTEOT took me a while to read mostly because the book wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be. Like most sci-fi it was a story about how we treat each other, and the futures that can manifest. I was thinking we were going into time travel, which we did a bit but...more, the story sight to help readers better understand how what we do now creates what comes next.

A dark and difficult story that I’m still processing years later. I came away with a profound sense of personal good fortune and a desire to simply SEE AND ACKNOWLEDGE invisible people. The future Connie experienced is such a contrast to the abuses perpetrated on a repeatedly broken human who continues to hope.

I read this book in a few days. It was gripping now I can’t get the story out of my head. I have profound saddness for Connie that I will think of for the rest of my life.

Slow start but once she grabs you, you are in for a hell of a ride. I totally reccomend this book.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I purchase extra copies to give away as gifts. I struggle to talk about the content without giving away key pieces that can ruin the experience. Please read. All of Piercy's works are worth the time. This one especially.

When I think of the writings of Philip K Dick the word I think of is inconsistent. Some of his short stories, such as the Minority Report are excellent science fiction taking precognition in a new direction. Many of his postapocalyptic stories go nowhere and are painful to read. The reader will find the good, the bad and the ugly in this collection. Then, again, having recently attended a performance of Timon of Athens, even Shakespeare didn't write great literature all of the time.

Philip K Dick's writing never fades. His work lives on, and apparently always will. His short stories are so full of marvelous characters, and intricate plots they have become high-grossing movies, but honestly, in my opinion, HIS written words are better than anything that Hiollywood has done to them. Reading, and now on CD audio, HIS words are HIS imagination as he first brought them to us. The stories in The Minority Report and other stories are the real PKD stories word for word as he wrote them, and this is what I enjoy the most.

It was easy for me to get quite excited by this short story set. These stories form the basic of three very fine sci-fi movies: Minority Report, Paycheck, and Total Recall. Being a big fan of all three, it was great to enjoy the original short stories too. There are also two other short stories in the set: Second Variety, and The Eyes Have It.Second Variety is definitely another fun thriller. Somewhat predictable, but fun nonetheles. The Eyes Have it is mercifully short, because it is a real stinker. As a whole though, this collection is a real gem, and a bargain as well.

Have read all Marcia Talley’s mysteries and consider Hannah Ives one of my best friends!

I have been a fan of Philip K. Dick for years and I especially like his short stories. I recommend his short stories to anyone who wants an introduction to his works.

Used, great condition for an older book. Basically NOS quality

His stories are amazing, especially considering when they were written.Of course, my favorie is "Do androids dream of electric sheep" (Blade Runner), but these stories are also fantastic.

Protagonist Hannah Ives, grandmother, cancer survivor, and frequent amateur sleuth, leaves her Mid-Atlantic home in Annapolis when she accepts an invitation from a state senator to be part of a fact-finding visit to Denver. In the Mile High City the senator's group will investigate the pros and cons of legalized marijuana, an issue supported by the senator, who is among the few in Maryland approved for medical use of the drug. When their pleasant stay at an upscale cannabis-oriented B&B is interrupted by murder, Hannah is on the case. Although not the strongest in this cozy series, the book's characters are appealing and the plot compelling enough to insure demand from Hannah's many fans.
