I am not the most avid reader. I like chapters and conclusions and plot lines that each have a purpose...or so I thought. The Dark Tower series has restored my faith that I can actually sit and enjoy reading a book simply for the joy of reading it. Not every character has to be essential, not every moment has to be epic. Some chapters are just a few words long. But I didn't ever notice. This is the first book I can remember just reading, not worrying how long it is or how much I have read. It can go on and on and I will continue to enjoy it. 7 volumes? Bring it on...

This is my third time reading this series and it hasn’t gotten stale. In fact, with each reading it’s getting better (if that’s possible). Next to The Stand, this series is my favorite SK. There’s no one better at weaving a complex story than SK and The Dark Tower is just that – complex, moving, exciting, terrifying and extremely sad. A majority of the series is set in a fictional world very much like our own and there are “thin” spots where one is able to go between our world and Roland’s world.**SPOILER**Roland recounts his youth one evening by the camp fire. His drawn three Susannah, Eddie, Jake plus the billy bumbler Oy are his rapt audience. The story of Susan Delgado and Roland’s youth is like a book within a book and could easily stand on its own. Roland is a newly crowned gunslinger at age 14 and he’s sent away by his father (along with his two best friends Cuthbert and Alain) to the safety of a small village in the west. When the trio arrives they find treachery brewing and Roland finds his first love, the beautiful Susan. Roland is introduced to the Dark Tower via a magic pink glass ball and his quest begins. The loss that Roland suffers at his young age definitely helps shape him into the man he becomes.

I've only read through half of Wolves of the Calla (that includes wind through the keyhole) but I'm tempted to just come out now and say this book is the best of the series. It's almost a stand alone, with minor editing it easily could be. This would make an amazing western, they need to devote a whole movie to just this book at some point for those that won't read it. Can't give it 10 stars so I'll settle for 5.

I'm writing this review for the entire series because once I started reading the books I didn't stop until I had made it through all of them. If you're a reader and you're unsure of whether or not you are ready for a Stephen King series, you can rest assured this doesn't follow the traditional Stephen King concept. Sure, there is magic and mystery, but it feels a lot more like a suspenseful epic (and, to be fair, it is certainly an epic) than some of the other books I've read by him.If you start this series, just go ahead and buy all the books; you're going to want them and stopping once you start is near impossible!

definitely another great book by si King follows story and has a lot of backstory in it so it’s pretty much a story of a story of a story lol good book though

I am a lifelong avid Stephen King fan. One of those that spooked myself reading the Shining at all hours of the night at the age of 11 in my bed with a flashlight. Also one of those that waited what felt like forever for him to get around to finishing The Dark Tower and Roland's quest. This book is the one book that could stand alone as a story within the story and it is good. Very good. A vivid, tragic, heart wrenching western where the characters leap off the page. I have read this whole series before. If you've completed this series before, you'll get how ironic it is to read it again. I couldn't wait to get back to this part. Now, of course I'll move on to the final books happily. I recommend reading the first 3 in the series before this one as they are all part of one story, but note this could stand alone if you start from 4 people and 1 Billy bumbler ( don't worry if you don't know what that is) on a quest in a world parallel to our own. This story is mostly about the youth of one of those 4; Roland, born in that world and trained as a gunslinger, perhaps the youngest to ever earn that name( and his guns with the sandalwood grips) there.

"The Dark Tower" is my favorite series from Stephen King, with each book presenting a compelling tale of the Gunslinger. Be sure to check out all the other books in this series as well: The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger,The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three,The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands,The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass,The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla,The Dark Tower VI: Song of Susannah,The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower.

It took me some time to finish this one. But it is an important part of getting to know our Gunslinger. It is removed from the story of The Dark Tower somewhat, and yet it is an important part of the journey to it. There were times, while I was reading it that I wasn't sure I'd want to read on to the next book, but at the end of this one, I find myself intrgued to see where the ka-tet is headed, and where the Beam will lead them next.

This book is an excellent detour and flashback from the main storyline. It is both great and terrible in more ways than one, but it brings us in a lot closer to the character of Roland. That is what matters most, for he is the one.I will gladly continue my journey to the Tower for the third time. I believe the story does actually get better with age and / or repetition.

Detailed without losing sight of how the different parts fit into the whole tapestry of that period. Fascinating incidents and stories about people great and small keep the reader interested, while giving him/her a vivid sense of how society worked in a very different era from this. Insightful all the way through, the writing crystal-clear. An excellent resource for both specialist and a person simply interested in the middle ages.

I read this book from cover to cover as part of a course I did on Medieval Church History - this book is about history in general, but I guess that it deals with a time period where the church was so ubiquitous that there is little need to deal 'separately' with church matters. Indeed, Davis gives entire chapters on things like the rise of the Papacy and the First Two Crusades. His book deals with a massive expanse of history and geography. He delves into matters concerning Russia, the Mongols, the Sassanids etc. etc. when needed, but his focus is overwhelmingly continental Europe - as the title leads us to expect. The book is actually organised thematically, which is quite amazing. Of course the chapters come in a kind of chronological sequence, but what Davis seeks to do, daringly, is to highlight the major issues of this period of time (such as Feudalism, or the Investiture Controversy, for instance), and tell history that way. Only a master of the field would attempt such as thing, and Davis pulls it off remarkably. Nonetheless, the result is kind of... potted. It's just too easy to lose a sense of flow as he shifts gears to move from one theme to another. You come out of the book appreciating medieval history, and understanding certain things (such as Justinian's conquests and the Fall of Rome, for example) really well. What's lacking sometimes is a sense of how these things fit together and what the overall sequence of events actually was.Don't get me wrong - this is a brilliant book. The timelines at the beginning of each chapter and the appendices at the end are excellent frames for what is a lucid and incredibly informative text. For all I know, this is the best book there is dealing with this expanse of history, and I feel so enriched to really understand the 'whys and wherefores' of so many crucial turning-points in history such as the rise of monasteries and the sickening Fourth Crusade. I do definitely recommend this book, but it gets 4 stars from me because I found it just a bit too potted.(The most bizarre thing of all is that the introduction to the second half of the book is all about architecture - but at no other point does Davis say anything about architecture other than in that 'introductory' section. Weird! I guess things like this give 'character' to a book.)[Footnote: Just so people know, Davis was a brilliant medieval scholar who wrote this book about 60 years ago for an introductory course he taught on medieval history - it was a compulsory background unit for students of modern history! Now, another scholar named Moore has revised the text a little, updated the 'Further Reading' sections and added Appendicies dealing with major debates and research that have occurred since the book was published. As I've said, these updates and new sections are good. What's most astonishing, however, is the way that Davis seems to have 'anticipated' a great deal of the scholarly work that would be done later - his analysis of Feudalism is a great example of this.]

The best is the comprehension of all the way from the barbarian invasions and the fall of the Roman Empire to the dawn of the Modern Age

Amazing book! Unfortunately our days lack writers and historians like Lynn Thorndike...

not for the casual reader

Practicle

A very thorough look at the Middle Ages, though it sometimes is not very readable.

Good read, excellent points, helpful sources, a must for history students.

As a true misfit in my generation, I knew nearly nothing about web design, search engines, or online business before reading this book. Somehow in only 236 pages, Bailyn gave me not only insight but also inspiration to become my own online architect. Having set down the book mere moments ago, I feel invigorated to work on my own website, contact potential resources, and build a personalized business. What’s more, I feel confident that this book, unlike so many other instructional books, had me in mind. Not me personally, of course. Rather, Bailyn seems to have imagined his reader as a whole person, excited and nervous, with a dream of success and a looming rent deadline all at once. If you have a business or are considering creating one, this book is a must read.

You find everything on the book for free on the Internet. I wish his other book, Outsmarting Google was still in print- because it is fantastic.

Really enjoyed this book. It's surprisingly easy to read and to follow. It has humor and you won't drift off in boredom. Plus it's really helpful and, it's already improved my SEO.
