A rare and exquisitely written and researched book on theculture of Death, and its evolution through art, architecture, literature, and faith through the ages. The subtlety of the gra estones and large-as-life stone effigies, as well as 500 year old perfectly preserved Monks with their skullcaps still placed on them is nothing less than stunning.

This book is huge.....didn't expect that. But if you want information, this book has it from many belief systems.

This is a second read of Aries' classic book. I find it absorbing and thorough in his writing and research, and a re-read is worthwhile.

Things to think about as we head into the future.

This a deep study of how death has been dealt with thru the centuries in Europe and to some degree in the United States. Is as methodical as you could possibly hope for in a book it also most feel like you're reading a manual more than a treaty, anyhow is a good read just not a engrossing read.

Was a required book for a paper that I wrote. I wish that the library had it, but they didn't. Some information that I already knew, but I just needed a citation.

I haven't had time to read it yet, but certainly will this summer. It is an added resource for my library.

This is a comprehensive survey of one thousand years (longer, really) of western attitudes towards death. By "western" were mostly talking "French", although Aries does include digressions into German, Italian, Spanish, English and American culture. I didn't find the intense focus on France to detract from the overall majesty of this 600+ page opus. For most of the thousand years, the "attitude towards death" that Aries is describing crosses national boundaires.Aries divides his study into four overlapping historical periods: "The Tame Death", "The Death of the Self", "The Death of the Other", and "The Invisible Death". The Tame Death roughly corresponds with the pre-Christian and early middle ages. This period was characterized by a meek acceptance of passing into a long period of sleep. Death is social, and the death ritual has a central place in the society."The Death of the Self" is moves more into the middle and late middle ages. Here, death is used by the mendicant orders of Christianity to convert a quasi-pagan population. Thus, there is a corresponding rise in individual's concern with their own death. Also during this period, there is a rise in materialism, which creates a duality between the love of things and the renunciation of the material world which is supposed to preceed death. The Death of the Other and the Invisible Death are familiar to most modern folks. The Invisible Death is corresponds with the post WWII American model, and the Death of the Other largely corresponds to the romantic movement (lots of weeping, lots of drama).Aries basic thesis delves into "the Invention of Tradition" territory, i.e. that modern attitudes towards death are just that, modern, and largely without antecedent in history. Aries also points out that pre-Christian traditions of death have persisted far longer in the west then one might suppose. His main illustration for this contention is the observations that the concept of "purgatory" was not fully accepted until well into the 17th and 18th century (purgatory being an exclusively Chrisitian concept). The research and execution can only be considered awe inspiring, but the thesis less so. Any modern reader of history is aware that "tradition" is invented. Aries is less concerned as to why this might be the case, but for me, the "why" is the interesting question.

My 4 year old son loves collection toy robots that were popular from my childhood era of the 80s/90s . This book as been fun for us to read, doodle pictures from and even search for different old robots while hitting up local junk shops.

Excellent photography, English summaries, layout and size

I really enjoyed this book. Found it to be very interesting.Best regard,Alex Del Ro

Only a few pages of text and hundreds of color pictures! Its a great picture book full of robots of all decades, spaceships, and metal toys in general. They're all beautifully photographed and a great reference. If you love metal toys and collect then this is a book for your shelf.

Great book

If you want a picture book only this is okay. But for a collector it's poor. No prices are latest auction values. Who do they think is buying this book?

These are toys, the subject matter of a brilliant collection of the artifacts of Japanese ingenuity. Tin toys, produced by tin printing and punching machines, permit a peek into the Japan of the 1950's. Tin toys are mass produced but seem hand-crafted.There are robots and space ships. A robot tractor and bull dozer have particular charm. There is a robot seesaw. Also there are moon scouts, astronauts, capsules, space stations, and rockets. There are gear robots.Figures and scenarios are elaborate. Ball escalators are amusing. Skiers are pulled by a dog or turn on a sort of wheel. There is a ball kicker. A highly-wrought horse-race is presented, complete with painted spectators, seating, airplane, clubhouse, greenery. There is a Coney Island rocket ride.Popeye figures roller-skate, ride a bike, a plane. The pipe is always present, (signifier). There is a girl with a hula hoop, and one with a sewing machine. A remarkable piece is a boy with a camera--highly realistic. Other characters created by comics artists are present, such as Mickey Mouse, Batman, and fantasy figures. Finally, there are the cars. There is a TV crew bus and car. There is more than one Cadillac, Mercedes Benz, Lincoln, and Packard in the collection. This is magnificent.

Kitahara's world famous tin toy collection has been photographed many times, and featured in very small paperbacks and large coffee table spreads. This is probably the happy medium; a very inexpensive, large (nearly 350 pages) and visually inviting photoessay that lets the toys speak for themselves. As many books as there are on tin toy robots, they nearly all feature the same collections, and so the photography and presentation become paramount. Taschen has often featured Kitahara's museum(s) but never to better effect than in this inexpensive volume. Kitahara's collection also includes non-space themed tin toys, but this book concentrates on the robots and space toys from the '50s and '60s when Japan brought unbridled creativity and unparalleled design to tin toys.

Because unforgiveness plagues the world today, I didn't want to spend oodles of time belaboring the point, so I created this short story to deliver a fast message. Interesting concept. I wanted to recommend it to others, but...Needs good proofreading.70x70=4900 sadly, that would change the title

This story initially seems to be about two male characters, each of whom has a very different path in life, but events take a different turn for the reader. The author offers brief glimpses into the mental workings of each character while weaving together their lives into a greater narrative work. While this is a short piece, it probably could have been developed into a longer story, although it might have lost some of its "punch" had the author done it that way.

This book was a delightfully straightforward presentation of the need to forgive. We all stand before judgement and without having a heart to forgive others, we stand condemned ourselves.

What a book that in few pages that so clearly shows us God's plan for us to show mercy and forgiveness. Read with caution--it will change your life! This is one that I will keep in my home library to read and re-read; but recommened to all.

Hi highly recommend this book ! The author gave me insight about forgiveness that i had read in Scripture, but had never read it the way she explained it. She's very anointed of God.

Great why am I being forced to review this friggin book and also forcing me to use nine teen words

Life changing!!! Great read!!

I could be a spoiler here in just a few words, but I won't -- it's a very short story with a very strong message about the power of forgiveness -- and I don't want to wreck the joy it brought me by spoiling it for you. This book is more than worth its price and the investment in time I made in reading it is already paying off in multiples. It exposes the links between honesty, humility and self-esteem in some very subtle yet deep ways. There is a lot of wisdom described with so few words; so much so that I'm still speechless -- a week after having read it -- which is quite unusual for me.Read this book. You won't be sorry.

As always Wanda Brunstetter has written a wonderful Amish story. The Hope Jar is different from other Amish stories and it was such a great story. The only negative to this book, it will be February 2019 before the second book in the series is released. ðŸ˜ΕΎ I highly recommend this book!

Oh my word, this story seemed so real. Michelle had such a horrific upbringing, to see her finally start realizing that she wasn't alone and also realizing that God is real and always with her, makes this a truly touching story. I imagine in the second book that Michelle will still face many challenges, but that she will finally find peace and fulfillment in God's love.

I love Wanda Brunstetter books and this last one did not disappoint! If you like romance and lots of suspense this is the book for you. I couldn't put it down!

There was nothing I didn't like about this book. I couldn't put it down. I was anxious to see what would happen when the real Sara turned up at her grandparents farm. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I want to find out if Michelle converts to the Amish faith and if the relationship with Ezekiel turns to marriage.

Wanda Brunstetter what a fantastic book I love the Prayer jar. The story is about deceit but Michelle needed the love of a family she never had of course she went about it the wrong way love and forgiveness is what life is all about I can't wait until February for the next book I think I have read every book you have written and enjoyed every single one of them. Thank you

Oh no, I can't believe Part I of the story is over. The Hope Jar (The Prayer Jars Book 1), by Wanda Brunstetter, is a Great read. You meet Michell, Sarah, Mary Ruth, Willis Lapp, Brad, Ezekiel and many more friends. I look forward to the next one.

An interesting book on how a individual had a difficult life, than met an Amish couple who tried to help. Very exciting and great reading.

I have read all of Wanda’s books but I think this is my favorite. I can’t wait until the second book comes out!!! I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Michele once she returns to the Amish farm.
