Frank Peretti first got my attention as an author when I read "This Present Darkness"When I started reading The Visitation, I wasn't really sure where the story was headed. There seemed to be a lot of back story that I thought wasn't really going anywhere - boy was I wrong! Yes there was quite a bit of back story in the beginning of the book, but it all makes perfect sense by the time you get to the end. I obviously don't want to give anything away, but the ending is amazing. You may think the book is slow, but it gets better and better, faster and faster as you get deeper into the book. Toward the end of the book you can't turn pages fast enough!

Interesting (and long) novel. Part supernatural, part life story of the main character, a disillusioned pastor (I'm guessing perhaps a lot of this might be biographical from Peretti? He says as much in the intro). It's like a combination of Christian suspense and John Green-esque coming of age, from an evangelical Christian youth's perspective, the high hopes and plans to change the world for Christ, and subsequent disillusionment when the Red Sea doesn't part the way you expect. It's actually a very clever and interesting story, if a little disjointed when changing between modern day events and the main character's life. I have to say, though, this is my first Peretti novel and am impressed to no end with the author's skills. Very engaging voice, interesting, fleshed out characters, and just a strong, overall talent. I can see why he's built such a massive audience. And he seems to have fun often with the average, overly-restrictive CBA reader by walking the line with language and content. Never crosses it but sometimes I can picture him smirking when writing some passages. I'll definitely check out some of his other stuff in the future.

I first tried to read this book in my youth and couldn't get past the first 2 chapters. After the action of the piercing the darkness series, I felt that this book fell short. Fast forward many years, I'm so glad I read it. Maturity was what I needed to appreciate the struggles of our hero. Even though you could sense that the author was trying to hold himself back from launching into a demon vs angel tirade, it was a really entertaining and deeply spiritual book for me. I could relate with Travis and his search for something deeper in the familiarity of church... Travis's struggles with his identity as a Christian and as a pastor is most representative of the times we feel spiritual distance. I thought some parts of the plot (false messiah's antics) were a little unreal, but it was entertaining. Thank you very much, Mr. Peretti!

Ever since I was a kid, I had a thing for cryptids, so imagine my surprise when I saw that Frank Peretti had written a book dealing with Bigfoot.I had my first exposure to Peretti years ago when I read The Oath, which, if memory serves me correctly, I enjoyed. At the time, I made it a point to check out more of the author's work but just never got around to it. Between life and other books, he just got lost in the shuffle. Part of the reason he got lost is because I heard he was "Christian author," which turned narrow-minded me off to his books; however, he wrote a book about Bigfoot. Bigfoot! Despite the mixed reviews, I HAD to check it out.Monster gets off to a mysterious start with a hunter covering up an obvious murder, staging the scene so that it looks like the man died in an accident. Why? Well, it's obvious he's tracking something, and he doesn't want people to know what actually killed the man. One can assume it's a bear, but is there something else loose in the woods, something more vicious than a bear? The scene then jumps to two couples who are planning to meet up for a survivalist weekend. Reed and his wife, Beck, arrive at the rendez vous point ahead of their friends, only to find the cabin they had been planning on staying in destroyed and the hired guide nowhere to be found. They investigate the cabin and the area surrounding it and come to the conclusion that it was a bear. Because it's so late in the day, they are left with no recourse but to camp out for the night, as there isn't enough daylight left for them to make it safely back to civilization. They set up camp away from the cabin take the necessary precautions so as not to attract the bear to their campsite, but as soon as the sun goes down, the surrounding forest comes alive with grunts, howls, and what they swear is a woman sending out a a mournful wail into the darkness. They become aware of a presence in the woods, and they realize it isn't a bear, but something with intelligence, as it's keeping just far enough within the shadows of the trees so it can't be detected. They try to stay calm, but fear takes over, and soon they are running through the woods. In the process of trying to evade whatever is pursuing them, they stumble across the body of their guide, hidden in a tree and practically decapitated. Needless to say, the chase ends with Reed witnessing some creature carrying his wife off into the woods. This sets the stage for the rest of the book: a search for and rescue of Beck from the creature that took her.Despite the mounting evidence that the creature in the woods is definitely a biped, there is a resistance group among the rescuers who continue to insist it's a bear and try to convince the others that there's no such thing as Bigfoot and that what carried off Reed's wife was indeed a bear, and they shouldn't expect to find her alive -- if they find her at all. Meanwhile, we find out Beck is alive. Injured, but alive, and being held "captive" by a family of Sasquatches: an adult male, two adult females, and a juvenile male. It become obvious that the one adult female view Beck as her child and is determined to take care of her and protect her from the other members of her family (?), who make it clear they do not want Beck among them. Will Beck survive long enough to be rescued by her husband? Will her husband give up the search in light of evidence that points to Beck no longer being among the living? And what of the mysterious hunter from the beginning? With Monster, Peretti has created a thrilling novel that is so much more than just a tale of survival. It's also a tale of intrigue because yes, there is a cover up, and there's also a twist that you won't see coming. His characters are fully realized, and you come to care what happens to them. As far as his creatures are concerned, you gain an insight into them that you wouldn't expect, so yes, you even care about what happens to them, more so as the truth is revealed. The thing I can't understand are some of the reviewers' comments, saying that the religion is laid on rather thick. I didn't find that to be the case at all. I've found Koontz's later work to be rather heavy handed and preachy when it comes to religious beliefs, but within the context of the book, the characters praying and asking God to deliver/return them safely is quite believable. Even the most un-religious person will sometimes throw up a prayer to the Man upstairs asking them for a little help, so this aspect didn't bother me nearly much as it seems to bother other readers. And it certainly hasn't turned me off to the author. I know I said this once before, but I definitely will be seeking out more works by this author, and this time I fully intend on following through.Would I recommend Monsters? Absolutely! I think it's one of the best Bigfoot novels I've read to date.

I'd give it 3.5 stars, but there's no option to do that in the rating system. There are many lessons to be learned from reading this book ... from the feeble-minded Christian who really doesn't know what the Bible truly teaches to one who thinks he's done enough for God and has given up. There are many who are in between, wanting to be "spiritual" without actually being spiritual in the heart. These fall for the trappings of appearance rather than substance. The existence and impact of evil on the lives of the unsaved, who are completely unaware that there are spiritual forces at work throughout the world, can be devastating. Despite the reality of similar occurrences in history, the problem is many of the unsaved probably wouldn't read this book, or just consider it entertainment. The story is an interesting one ... a little drawn out in a few places and kinda silly in a few others, but the ending is realistic (I'm not handing out any clues).

I received The Art of Advocacy earlier this week. I haven't finished it yet, but I've devoured much more of it than I thought I would so soon. I can tell already that it's going to be a mainstay on the bookshelf above my desk. In fact, it should be a mainstay on every litigator's bookshelf.I'm a senior associate in the litigation group of relatively large firm. I do quite a bit of motions briefing in my current gig. I'm an okay writer, and I've been lucky to be blessed by cases with good facts and law (which have led to several wins.) Despite that joy that comes from success, my biggest problem has always been that I find good written advocacy to be really, really difficult. It does not come naturally, and the anxiety/frustration that comes with wanting it to be perfect - but knowing that won't be easy - isn't very fun. This is the reason The Art of Advocacy has sucked me in.The book's style and format is different from any other advocacy text I've seen. And, I love it. Reading through the carefully selected examples has motivated me to dive back into writing projects, trying to emulate the techniques in the excerpts I just read. I imagine it's not unlike watching Michael Jordan highlights before heading out to the basketball court. Whether conscious or not, observing the best inspires you to go out and try to play the same way. (And, hopefully, make your effort a little bit stronger in the process.)So, well done Mr. Messing. You've done a very valuable thing here. This is a real resource, I expect it to overly dog-eared and highlighted in no time. This should be required reading for every lawyer -- from first year associates to partners. Buy it.

In a field in which effective practitioners MUST be good writers, this book is absolutely essential. I cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone looking to improve their legal writing.I wrote reasonably well before entering law school, so I assumed that I would have no trouble with legal writing. But it turns out that legal writing is hard. Lawyers work in an artificial world in which nearly everything is constrained—the available facts, the authoritative texts, the accepted argumentative forms. Even the structure of an argument is restricted by the court’s local rules. To write effectively, you can’t just navigate these obstacles; you have to actively use them to your advantage. Messing’s book teaches you how to do that at every turn. The book is outstanding in a number of ways, but three stood out to me.First, and most importantly, I wholeheartedly believe in Messing’s pedagogical approach: “the only good way to learn about writing is to read good writing.” That’s particularly true in a field as specialized and insular as law. Understanding the “principles” of effective writing is important, of course, but learning to write by learning rules is like learning how to hit a baseball by studying biomechanics. Messing’s lessons are built around meaty examples from top advocates, so you’re constantly exposed to exemplary work. You can’t help but pick up good habits.Second, the book shows that every aspect of a brief can and should be persuasive. Perhaps the most important thing I learned from the book is the power of facts. (That Messing dedicates three chapters to facts is telling.) There’s even a chapter on weaponizing your table of contents—something I had never considered before picking the book up.Third, while the excerpts are the book’s main attraction, Messing’s copious annotations are packed with useful information. Following his advice from the introduction, I read the examples first, ignoring the annotations. Then I returned for a second reading, this time including the annotations. I was consistently shocked by how little I noticed on my own. Subtle bits of advocacy were folded into every nook of the arguments. Without a veteran guide, it’s difficult to see what good lawyers are doing, or why they’re doing it. Messing breaks it down. At the same time, he doesn’t pull punches. When a lawyer slips up, Messing points it out, and explains how it could have been better. There are other things about the book that I appreciated. It’s simple and straightforward, but covers advanced strategies. The writing is excellent—as it should be in a book about writing! The organization and typesetting are smart and attractive, so the book is enjoyable to read.I could go on, but I won’t. This is a fantastic book. If you’re a law student, you owe it to yourself to read it. Even if you’re an experienced lawyer, I’d be shocked if this book didn’t help you improve your craft.(One note. I originally bought the Kindle edition, but the layout isn’t as good as the print version. Unless you’re trying to go fully digital, get a paper copy.)

Awesome! learned some great tips and trips. However, this book teaches more by showing examples of writing and using annotations to explain what the author of the book felt the author of the brief (or other writing) did correctly/effectively. I like this style way better than my "traditional" legal writing book that was assigned, but it may not be for you.We were assigned the book "Your Client's Story" for Legal Writing class. I didn't like that book and kept getting mediocre grades on assignments. So I bought this book and it helped a LOT!!1

Struggling through my first brief, I heard about this book form my 3L mentor. I'm glad I took his advice. Noah does a great job of distilling the most salient points in each excerpt and then categorizing them by theme. Rather than having to read through the whole book, whenever I'm in a tough spot, I simply jump to the relevant chapter. I've been told time and time again that learning to writing is exercise. Emulating the practices of great legal writers has been a great way to get my feet wet, thanks Noah!
