Review

"Breuer's tough, brutalist designs were sculptural and expressive, and their ambition and scale has come back into fashion. This is a serious study." —Financial Times"It is truly a must-own for all architectural enthusiasts." —Interview Online"In a beautiful new tome from Phaidon, architect Robert McCarter gives us the most complete monograph of the pioneering modernist." —Fast Company's Co.Design"An impressive and weighty new monograph by Robert McCarter... Should realign Breuer's position in the canon of modern masters... Covers 100 buildings and 24 furniture designs, and is a joy to spend time over, with its beautiful array of photographs, and McCarter's exhaustive - but never exhausting - text on the designs... It is time to rightfully rank Breuer alongside Mies, Wright and Le Corbusier, and this publication should aid that cause." —The Irish Times"This impressive and weighty new monograph by Robert McCarter should go some way to realigning Breuer's position in the canon of modern masters." —TLS (Times Literary Supplement)"Meaty, well-illustrated... [Breuer] knew how to wield the expressive powers of modern materials." —The Observer, The New Review

Weighing in at a hefty six pounds, this well-produced and researched text exhaustively covers the career of Breuer from many viewpoints and contains hundreds of photographs and illustrations. This is a seminal work. I would think that even if you have other material on Breuer this would contain new viewpoints and is a worthwhile addition to an existing library of De Stijl, Bauhaus, and International Style works--or a fantastic starting point if it's your first book on Breuer.

This is not a review of this book - Breuer by Robert McCarter - but a WARNING to anyone thinking about purchasing books or any other item from CE_BOOKHOUSE, and photo evidence of the "NEW" copy of Phaidon's beautiful Breuer edition that they sent me.There is no way a book is mistreated and frankly destroyed as an object, by sitting on a shelf or in some other form of reasonable storage. What you can see in the pictures appears to be more than just negligence, and looks like deliberate damage that cannot be made by simply dropping it on the floor several times, scratching it with a sharp object, soaking it and let it mold, but at the least by all the above.I do not only feel ill treated but offended by the utter disregard shown by CE_BOOKHOUSE (https://www.amazon.com/s?me=A27SBMZTKG1FOT&merchant=A27SBMZTKG1FOT&qid=1523325440) for me as a customer, for the publisher, whose book it is delivering and presenting, and for amazon, whose reputation is also dragged through the mud.It is insulting that I, as a paying customer, have to find the time and bother to write and call amazon, write a review and do my part to call attention to the unacceptable service provided by an amazon-affiliated Seller, while I don't get as much as an apology or a compensation for my horrible experience, from CE_BOOKHOUSE's part.I sincerely hope for a substantial penalty for CE_BOOKHOUSE and hopefully it's banning from amazon. While Iam not holding my breath in this respect, I will at least upload the pictures of the destroyed book I had to unpack after a week of waiting.I will also post these pictures on the Phaidon editorial's twitter account, along with the name of the amazon-affiliated Seller that desecrated their book, misrepresented the quality of their work and did them an awful favor, in order to draw their attention to the complete disregard CE_BOOKHOUSE has for its books and for who are ultimately Phaidon's customers.I hope anyone reading this, and viewing these pictures, considers giving their business to a Seller with respect for customers and the books it distributes and commercializes, and staying away from buying anything from CE_BOOKHOUSE.STAY AWAY FROM CE_BOOKHOUSE!

A great collection from an incredible artist.

Excellent book!

I will be brutally honest: this is a 'must read' for any design or architecture student, scholar or enthousiast. 6 stars!

A scholarly tome! Gorgeous photography throughout.

Excellent

Caesar: Selections from his Commentarii De Bello Gallico (English and Latin Edition)

Review

The De Bello Gallico of Julius Caesar has been a staple of second-year Latin programmes for many centuries. This work, however, is far too long to be covered entirely in one course, and it has always been the task of the professor to determine which books and chapters of the Gallic Wars were to be surveyed. The recent decision to set a syllabus for De Bello Gallico in the Advanced Placement Latin literature course has simplified this task immensely. This new students' edition of De Bello Gallico, prepared by Hans-Friedrich Mueller, has been issued to address the new AP syllabus. It is a pleasure to say that Mueller succeeds admirably in this. The presentation of the text has been done according to the pattern of Clyde Pharr's classic edition of the Aeneid: the Latin text with vocabulary and notes on each page. Words in the text that the student has met previously are in italic font; the remainder of the words are to be found in the following vocabulary. There are also copious notes on a variety of subjects: linguistic, stylistic, military, and cultural. Furthermore, in addition to a complete glossary of the words found in De Bello Gallico, there is also a fold-out vocabulary sheet listing high-frequency vocabulary (which would be those words in italic font). This will prove quite worthwhile for the student who is reading along in the text, so that one will not lose his or her place in the text by having to stop and refer to the glossary or to a dictionary. This work includes, along with the Latin text, English translations of all chapters not presented in the original Latin; this, too, meets the requirements of the new AP Syllabus. There is a very useful appendix containing the grammatical and rhetorical features used by Caesar in De Bello Gallico. This appendix supplements the references to these literary figures that are found in the various footnotes, and helps the student begin to understand the nature of Latin style. Finally, there is a quite complete and highly appropriate introduction containing biographical and literary information about Julius Caesar and his motivations for writing. There is, as well, an informative discussion of the nature and organisation of the Roman army. This helps to clarify for the student the nature and the importance of that institution.Overall, one cannot recommend this text too highly. It should easily become the essential textbook for second year Latin. It will also be of use at the college level, and be useful for any and all interested amateurs. --Stephen Pearce, Benjamin Franklin High School, New OrleansWritten by Hans-Friedrich Mueller and edited by Donald Sprague,Caesar: Selections from his Commentarii De Bello Gallico is a 414-page compendium presenting unadapted Latin passages from the Commentarii De Bello Gallico: Book 1.1 7; Book 4.24 35 and the first sentence of Chapter 36; Book 5.24 48; Book 6.13 20 and the English of Books 1, 6, and 7. Caesar: Selections from his Commentarii De Bello Gallico includes all the required English and Latin selections from Caesar's De Bello Gallico for the 2012-2013 AP* Curriculum. Features: Introduction includes historical context, an overview of the Roman army, and Caesar as General, Politician, and Writer Latin text accompanied by same-page notes (grammatical, literary, historical, contextual) Of special note is the 'same-page' running vocabulary, the 'pull-out' vocabulary, and the complete Latin-English glossary. Enhanced with the inclusion of an online grammatical appendix, a select bibliography, eight newly-created maps, 19 black-and-white illustrations, and an appendix (Figures of Speech), Caesar Selections from his Commentarii De Bello Gallico is an ideal, 'student friendly' text book and curriculum supplement for personal and academic library Latin Language Studies reference collections and instructional reading lists. --James A. This was such a powerful and emotional book. It’s my favorite in the series so far.Sunny lost his mother at birth and he’s always considered himself in debt to her. He runs for her honor and he’s great at it, except it’s not what his heart wants.Sunny has a difficult relationship with his father and the distance between them is one of the main subjects of the diary entries that make up this book.Sunny speaks to “Diary” as if it’s a person...sometimes his mother and sometimes his father and sometime neither...but it’s so touching and transformational.Wonderful.

I'm so confused. I don't know what went wrong here. I'm actually a little annoyed with this book. I feel like the quality has decreased from one book to the next. Ghost was such a great book, but I can't say the same about the rest of the series. This one was the worst so far. It's such a shame because I was really looking forward to Sunny's story. He was always one of my favorite characters, and I had such high hopes. It was written in "Dear Diary" style, and unfortunately, I found Sunny's narrative voice to be very annoying. And all those sounds "boom, tish, rrrah, bla", I just couldn't take it.The story would have been so much more touching and emotionally charged had it been written in verse form or regular narrative, but all these diary entries were...kind of lame. There were a few gems in there, and that doesn't surprise me because I know what Jason Reynolds is capable of. I give it a 2 stars, because I'm biased and I love Reynolds. But in truth, I'm not sure it deserves more than a star.

Again! He did it again! Left us wanting more! I love his characters and the emotional integrity and plot development! I want to read the next one as soon as possible! The voices come to life. The conflicts are universal. My son and I read the book out loud to each other. It’s great bonding time! We laughed out loud as well as many more emotions.

Jason Reynolds has done it again! Sunny’s story is beautifully written in a diary that I want to read over and over again.

got this for my son. he loves reading Jason Reynolds' books. That says a lot about Reynolds' writings. It's almost impossible to get my son to read. but he goes out of the way to get me to buy him Jason's books and he reads them right right away. Thanks for being able to appeal to boys like my son.

This was a #bookaday for me! What a wonderful third installment. It was a terrific story about loss, grief, forgiveness and moving on. Another fantastic middle grade novel from the incredible Jason Reynolds. So fortunate to have his books in the world. Keep writing, man!

I purchased Sunny, Lu, and Ghost for my 13 year old granddaughter, and her parents purchased Patina. She thoroughly enjoyed all.

Jason Reynolds is amazing. My little brother loves this series so much.

I enjoyed reading "A Year in Provence" years ago when it was first published, and since it was on the recommended reading list for our upcoming 3 week tour of France, I decided to re-read it. We will be spending some time in Provence, though not mingling with the locals to the extent that Mayle did when he and his wife moved from England and bought an old farm house to remodel and live year around. Mayle's adventures in hiring contractors and getting any work done on a reliable timetable are told humorously, thought with no disrespect to the French workers. They learn that in France, time is marked by seasons rather than days. They finally devise an ingenious method to get all the contractors to come back and complete the various unfinished projects around the house before Christmas - they send out invitations to a champagne reception to which the spouses are also invited. They know that none of the contractors will want their partners to be embarrassed by incomplete work !Mayle also writes of their journeys to visit fabulous restaurants and the French love of food and wine. He cultivates vines on his own property, and also learns to appreciate a perfect olive oil.The tales of the endless string of visitors, some mere casual acquaintances, and some of whom invite themselves to stay, are also told with humour and restraint, though you definitely get the impression that they felt put upon from time to time. I also discovered that it can be brutally hot during the summer months in Provence, so I'm glad we're going in early spring !"A Year in Provence" is not at all a travelogue, or even a guide book, but is a terrifically entertaining series of essays about living among the French in every season, being accepted (at least to a certain extent) into their culture, and enjoying all that this beautiful country has to offer.

We are traveling in Provence this summer, and a friend recommended that I find and read this book to get a feel for the area. Although it is an older book and times surely have changed somewhat in the almost twenty-five years since it was written, I found it to be highly entertaining as I read about his experiences living in the area. His style is conversational, as if he were sitting in your living room for a chat. His descriptions of the local people, and semi-quoting their conversations is, at times, hilarious. Mayle also does a credible job depicting the countryside, food, travel, and slower lifestyle of the natives of the area. I found this book so entertaining that I also read two others: Toujours Provence, and Encore Provence:New Adventures in the South of France. If you're looking for an insight into the area of Provence France from someone other than a factual travel guide, I highly recommend Peter Mayle's books.

Too many French language descriptions. I have a problem with English speaking authors using French language to describe people or things, especially when English will do just fine. I have a cursory knowledge of French but I had to keep my dictionary nearby when I read this. Other than that, this was an enjoyable read, especially since my wife and I visited the area a month before I read the book.

The book is so well written that It makes you dream of living in Provence. I will be travelling soon to the places in Provence to enjoy the amazing food, beautiful places and friendly people in France. It is sad that Peter Mayle passed recently and I'm very grateful that he wrote this marvellous book.

Being a neophyte to the “travel literature” genre, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But in Peter Mayle’s book “A Year in Provence”, I was surprised how absorbing the reading experience was, without the need for a distinctive narrative plot thrust. After a career on Madison Avenue, Mayle uproots his life and takes residence in the quaint and quirky region of Provence, located in Southeast France. Mayle and his wife realize they have much to learn in navigating their new surroundings. The novel’s structure is quite simple—each chapter is a month in the year—but Mayle’s observations cut into the essence of Provencal life, not just the hidden gems and signature qualities of the region, but reaches for the underlying motivations of the people, the way they move and think, and why no one seems to leave. Part of the enchantment is meeting all these characters—the plumber, the reclusive neighbor, the butcher, the unwanted guests. The prose is simplistic but thoroughly engaging, particularly when Mayle reveals small tidbits in timely places that echo latent cultural rivalries. One word of caution: don’t read on an empty stomach! (You’ll quickly realize what I mean)

I had to read this book as I was headed to Provençe for 2 weeks. I found the book very interesting. The author starts out with life in January and then each month there after. As the book progresses it gets more and more interesting how life is really like for an expat (from England). After we got settled in our apartment, I figured out we were staying within a few miles of where this author lives, though he never discloses exactly. I fell in love with the area from the first drive along narrow N900. At night, the sky is so crystal clear that you can see every star. We left just as the winds of the Fall were starting up. It was great place to visit and even better since I read this book. I don't think I could live here. The author set me straight on that one!
