The Sun: Our Nearest Star (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out)

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-2-The third edition of this title pairs bright, computer-produced cartoon art with a basic discussion of the sun and its importance to life on this planet. The pictures and text work closely together to impart such information as how large, hot, and distant the sun is, and how its energy is stored, not only in the foods we eat, but also in the fossil fuels we use. However, as Branley concludes with a particularly poorly thought out sundial project, and neglects to recommend books or Web sites, or to warn readers about the dangers of gazing directly at the sun, Paulette Bourgeois's The Sun (Kids Can, 1997) and Allison Lassieur's The Sun (Children's, 2000) make preferable replacements for the older edition (1988).John Peters, New York Public Library Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I'm a big fan for the series (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out) and so far I had bought 40-50 books so I'm really surprised when I got this book. I'm truly disappointed as this book is by far the shortest of all (only 19 pages of story instead of the usual 26-28 pages). On top of that, the fonts are huge so it "fills up" the page without providing any significant material. The add insult to the injury, the text is only every other page, so you have this double-page spread of picture with very little text (feels like a picture book instead of Level 2 of this series).I finished reading the book for my kids in 2 minutes. Usually it's about 8-15 minutes, with few titles are up to 20 min. Very unhappy with this book.

A GREAT teacher at a typically under-supported school needed reading materials for the students; it was VERY much appreciated...

Great for a science lesson plan.

Students loved this!

This has very good information! My first graders learned a lot from it.

Wonderful introduction to the Sun.This is a good level for children ages 3 to 6 years.

My children love the book!! Easy to read and interesting story and facts

A great, well-written book!

Kids likes it

Speedy shippingAwesome book

it is good.

My students love the selections in this book!

My niece wasn't in to practicing her lesson, but now is much more interested since she play some familiar songs. Thanks!

Good song choice, harmony, transposition and improvisation opportunities

My students enjoy this book. It has a decent variety of songs but i'm not sure why some of the songs are included in a children's book (She Loves You etc.) It's pretty good quality as far as the arrangements go, but Faber books do tend to over simplify and lose some of the integrity of the songs. I often modify them to better serve my students. But is probably the best currently on the market.

its full of great songs and its really great, i use it all of the time and evrybody likes the songs.

#301,195 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I first met Alistair Finley’s character in another book by Cooper Davis, A King Undone, in December 2014 and immediately fell in love. As the months went by and then years, I kept looking for and hoping that his story would be published next but it wasn’t, until a few days ago when I saw A Gentleman Revealed on Amazon. I couldn’t wait to crack the book open and it didn’t disappoint, in fact it exceeded my expectations. Definitely worth the wait. The romance is set in an alternate historical universe where men loving men was accepted; and the marriage mart ball hosted by Lady Elsevier during every Season was in high demand as males could not wait to meet other eligible men and get married.Alistair was not the typical romantic hero. He was very overweight and also an alcoholic. To complicate matters, he was the illegitimate son of the late king and he was being blackmailed by the king’s former lover who hated him. He told Alistair that if he ever revealed his heritage he would lose his position as Secretary to the current king, his half brother, who was unaware of his lineage, and be banished from the kingdom. Due to the stress of everything in his life he kept drinking and eating non-stop, developing an ever-expanding waistline. He was definitely not open to romance because he didn’t feel that any male would be attracted to him due to his lack of ancestry, corpulent figure and alcoholism. While Alistair attended Lady Elsevier’s annual balls he spent the entire evenings hiding out behind large decorations or plants because he didn’t want to be noticed.Enter the handsome, dashing and much younger Lord Marcus Avenleigh who was hell-bent on winning Alistair as his husband. He had been attracted to Alistair for 2 years and was determined that this year Alistair would not escape his arms and bed, as his father was threatening to put him on the marriage mart if his suit was not successful soon. Marcus was single-minded in his pursuit of the shy and pompous palace secretary who took every opportunity to ignore him despite Marcus' best efforts. Alistair’s confidence was at an all-time low when he met Marcus. He could not believe that he deserved the love of such a young, handsome and outgoing man, as in his experience the only men who pursued him were looking for access to the King. He continued to reject Marcus hoping that he would give up his suit, but Marcus was not that easy to dissuade. He had always loved larger men and Alistair’s size was the initial attraction for him until he got to know the man’s other qualities and fell in love.Marcus was funny, mouthy, and did not lack confidence so Alistair was playing a losing game. In addition Marcus had a support system that anyone would envy – three red headed brothers who had more charm than should be allowed in any family: his father the Duke, his eldest brother Ethan and the twins. Who could resist these men when they decided to help Marcus in their own inimitable way once they realized he was really in love. However, Marcus had previously been the subject of gossip due to an old scandal, and when this scandal raised its ugly head again during his suit, misunderstandings ensued and the romance unravelled violently, leaving Marcus heartbroken and Alistair a broken man. The main help for Alistair during his separation from Marcus was Ethan who dedicated himself to bringing the lovers together, while the Duke and the brothers were all very supportive of Marcus when everything fell apart and he was inconsolable.A Gentleman Revealed is a multi layered story dealing with important addiction issues, as well as mental, verbal and physical abuse, in addition to blackmail. The complexity of the different story lines was expertly handled by the author whose skill was evident throughout as she weaved the unconventional and heartwarming romance in between the more serious topics. I was fully engaged as the story moved back and forth from the intrigue at the palace to Marcus’ family members who were a delight. We should all be so lucky to be part of such a wonderful family.I thought that the author did an outstanding job of bringing both the characters and the world building to life with all the pomp and circumstance, period clothing and mannerisms as well as the intrigue that permeated this universe. I’m sure that writing a historical romance is a challenge for any author, especially one who writes mostly contemporary stories, and developing realistic characters that entertain and hold readers’ interest for hours on end, as this book did for me, is something that is extremely difficult to achieve. I thought that A Gentleman Revealed delivered on all fronts. This is an incredible piece of writing with some of the most complex characters especially Alistair, who is unique. In this book not only were the MCs and supporting characters exceptionally well crafted, but also the dialogue, narrative and pacing. All of the characters seemed to jump off the page and come to life and that is due to the artistry of Cooper Davis. BTW the brogue was to die for....One last note, Ethan was one of the best supporting characters in this book. I adore him and can’t wait for his story which is scheduled for release in the fall.

An alternate history m/m Regency Romance set against the world of high society, the Season, and the Palace for a pair of unlikely lovers with troubled pasts by a new to me author. I most definitely had to give it a go.ReviewA Gentleman Revealed is the first book of the Lords of Avenleigh series. I discovered once I started reading that its actually a spin-off of the earlier Noble Pleasures duo featuring a side couple in this series. I had no trouble beginning here, but I am curious now to go back for Arend and Julian’s story. The alternate history is mild in that the country and places named are different, but this is the British Isles Regency Period (ignore the blurb on that one) and the glaring difference is that same sex relationships are not unlawful or taboo so it makes for an interesting variation when it comes to the fashionable Season, the marriage mart, and the dynamics of courtship.Lord Marcus is a congenial, happy sort with three older rascally brothers and a widowed ducal father who wants his sons happiness above all. He has a gift for the violin and a penchant for a certain buttoned up, husky-shaped King’s Secretary with prim airs. He finally goes for it and the pair begin quite the tempestuous courtship.Opposite to handsome and sweet Lord Marcus’ uncomplicated situation is Alistair Finley, secret illegitimate brother to the king and blackmailed into silence by the former king’s lawyer, alcoholic and overweight and bowed down by his own secrets has a difficult time first believing in Marcus’ interest and allowing himself to love and be loved.I found this story a tough one to get into and had my moments throughout. Both Marcus and Alistair are drawn in such a way that they take turns blowing hot and cold and acting prudish and rakish in turn. I couldn’t get a bead on either of them until a third of the way through. It was an unhealthy relationship that needed to take a step back and allow for Alistair to heal before they could go further. Marcus was steady, true, and strong to the purpose despite him floundering in uncertainty about how he could best help and if love was going to be enough.Alistair’s self-loathing that took the form in indulging in food and alcohol and raw feelings about his body image earned my pity. He was an unacknowledged bastard son and now must hide the truth from his brother because of that nasty, slimy lawyer who played mind games and emotionally and verbally abused him for years. I really wanted a building to fall on the guy. I didn’t know what to make of Alistair’s cousin, Sam, who in his own pain and trouble took shots at him, while claiming to be Alistair’s friend and accepting him as a fostered brother of his cousin. Everyone, Alistair included, treated Sam’s hurtful remarks like jokes. I was relieved when he did see what terrible pain his hurtful teasing caused.Marcus’s family was hilarious with all those Scottish red heads that were spirited and mischief loving and a father who wanted them to act with honor, but also be happy. The family dynamics were great and Ethan’s role in Alistair and Marcus’ relationship was just amazing. Everyone needs a brother like Ethan. Marcus was amazing, too. He’d survived a scandal he didn’t cause and an abusive relationship in the past, but he still reached out and saw the diamond in the rough that was the troubled Alistair. Alistair pushed him away or strike out from his own place of pain and Marcus saw this. He was a beautiful soul as Alistair pointed out to him. There were some interesting dynamics addressed in this deeper story- dealing with addiction, being accepted by family, being supportive of a person who has addictions, parental expectations, gender defined and reversed, and so much more.Ultimately, it was all these complex layers along with the slowly emerging characters of the main players that won me over. This was a long book and had slower moments when I wanted them to get past the issues, but I also saw the need to take the time because these issues were huge and shouldn’t be swept over too quickly. Now that I’m introduced to the cast of characters and the situation I can’t wait for Ethan’s story next. So, it took me a bit and then I was impressed with how the author handled deeper matters. I thought it was great to see how altering that part of history to allow same sex relationships to be accepted would create some fun, new opportunities for historical romance. I would definitely recommend this one to those who enjoy m/m historical romance on the spicy side.

Have a box of tissues on hand when you read this one!I haven't read that many M/M romances, but I've found I enjoy those in a historical setting. This book is set in an alternate Victorian setting in which males are free to court and marry. Marcus and Alistair are a wonderful couple. I felt an affinity with Alistair, who had deep self esteem issues regarding his weight. He also had "daddy" issues. Marcus, on the other hand, came from a tight knit family with a loving patriarch. My favorite parts of the book dealt with Marcus's interactions with his brothers and Papa. The chemistry between our heroes was combustible, and their physical interactions were VERY hot.As for the tissues, I cried when there were heartfelt declarations. I cried when Alistair fought his demons. I cried when things went awry. I cried when......well, you get the picture. The only thing that kept this book from being a five star read was at times the story moved along slowly. But stick with it - you'll be happy you did. This book was provided by NetGalley for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
