In each chapter of this erratic look at the Los Angeles dance scene, Babitz (Black Swans) focuses on a different style of dance, with most of the text consisting of interviews with dance teachers. Predictably, the atmosphere of each dance space varies greatly. Paul McClure teaches two-step and insists that his studio, In Cahoots, is "just like the Cheers bar, everybody knows your name"; the salsa scene is, as Babitz describes it, "grisly" and far less friendly. The Stevens sisters, who run Pasadena Ballroom Dance, brag that their lessons have been the source of more than 450 marriages. Throughout, Babitz insists that dancing is flirty fun (as well as a good way to stay trim). Many of her observations are annoyingly flippant, such as her bizarre take on gender politics (male-female relations today are "ridiculous," she statesArather than sending for mail-order brides, American men just need to learn to dance). In a straightforward epilogue, Babitz tells of an accident she had while lighting a cigar that led to six weeks in the intensive care unit being treated for third-degree burns, then casually admits that, since her accident put her out of commission for a year, the information here may be out-of-date. The book is about the dance scene in Los Angeles in the 90s. Babitz took dance lessons, went dancing, interviewed dancers and instructors, and made friends among them. There is commentary interspersed with dialog. The book reads easily and in the Epilogue, written some time after the main text because she was seriously burned and spent time recovering, contains a brief update on the dance scene (which rapidly changes, with clubs coming and going, fads coming and going, dancers coming and going, including some dying). The chapters are based on specific dances: fox-trot, two-step, tango, cajun and fais-dodo, ballroom, salsa, and both east coast and west coast swing.At first blush the book seems a break from her previous works. They were fiction (although pretty autobiographical) and based primarily in the 60s, with some tales from her parents generation back into the 30s, when Holllywood was Hollywood. There was a grace and an ambiance which she presents. And there were certain people who were graced and who helped make that ambiance. In many ways that period passed in the 70s, when she wrote to fiction pieces. There is a nostalgia about them. TWO BY TWO also harkens back to that time, to Fred and Ginger, to when there still were social graces, where flirting was an art form. The dance scene has elements of this and TWO BY TWO traces this out, but in a New Journalism fashion. And the book is a paen to dancing, because it is fun and good for you. I recommend this book

I became interested in Eve Babitz after reading the March 2014 Vanity Fair article about her youth. She sounded fascinating and I vaguely remember her as writing articles for the L.A. Times magazine or similar publications in the 80s. This was one of the only two books by her I could find. It was highly disappointing. Reads as if she transcribed her phone conversations with a friend. The overall effect is like listening to your aunt talk to a friend of hers about a bunch of their other friends doing something that you have no interest in. I can't imagine this being of interest to anyone who does not take dance lessons. The blurb tried to promote it as having "celebrity gossip," but aside from one line about Madonna taking tango lessons from Joe Shmoe or whatever, I didn't see any. Gave up after skimming 1/4 of the book. Big yawn!

More grammatical errors that are now beyond irritating. They are unacceptable. There are plenty of well written, interracial romance books with few errors. Too many loose ends that weren't tied up. Thin plot and subplots with too many holes. New characters introduced with little or no backstory. Book was too short to provide answers. Gratuitous violence.Unbelievable subplots. Who is Irene Bolton and where did Joey meet her? Did the family really accept her? Did they trust her? Why was a hit placed on Nikki? Why didn't LaRoche mention that when he was in the safe house and said there was a hit on Teddy and Monk? How did Sal just show up? Had Teddy or Mick contacted him? If so, why wasn't more of his involvement stated in the story. No way does Sal's right hand man get away with so much without Sal not knowing? Why didn't Mr. All knowing Mick know what was going on? He knew that the other bosses wanted to get rid of Teddy! He knew Monk was Teddy's go to man. Why didn't he know who was taking his shipments and how it was tied to Monk's family? He didn't know! No way would be allow Nikki to be put in such danger, and certainly not Teddy.Other loose ends. Why is Blair "Witch" still Mick's Executive Assistant? Was she not stirring up trouble when she allowed Gloria to go in Mick's with a lady in a supposedly compromising position? She did the same at the end with Nikki. Will Nikki be the one to fire her? I hope she beats her down before firing her. Will Nikki promote Gloria and bring out the best in her? Will Gloria accept Nikki's help? Will she allow her bitterness and envy weaken her? Will Mick and his kids get family counseling with Tony?Why such a rushed ending that came out of the blue. What happened with Monk's brother and father? A two week vacation??? When will Teddy and Nikki get married or will they? Is Joey in for more heartache? Will Gloria resent Nikki being second in command to Mick at Sinatra Industries? Joey said that Nikki would end up being Gloria's boss. And on and on and on.I just love, love, love Teddy and Nikki and Mick and his family, otherwise I would have rated this book lower for it certainly deserved it: errors and more errors, thin plot, undeveloped subplots, lots of loose ends and no answers which are carried over from book to book, unnecessary characters, etc.

Nikki Tarver was thoroughly in love with Teddy T. Sinatra, the underboss to his father, Mick "The Tick" Sinatra's crime family. Teddy was thoroughly in love with Nikki. To top things off, his father was highly impressed with her as well. Even though they were engaged, they had not set a date due to problems coming up with the Sinatra Crime Family on the docks. They both felt that they were getting older now and was running out of time to settle down and have a family. Teddy was getting tired but when Nikki's life again was being threatened, he dropped his father's business to take care of his love. They both had a hold on each other, without a doubt.Mallory did not fail to bring the drama, action, and mystery in this story. The plot twist at the end had me fooled. I was not thinking the perp was whom it turned out to be. I kept scratching my head trying to figure out this "who done it." I just knew it was the Rain Man. All of that to climb up the crime family ladder. Mikey sure was making a bunch of stupid decisions and I see why his father had to cover for him. He just did not realize what family he was dealing with.I just love how the family stands behind each other and now Nikki was a part of this family through Teddy. I also love how both Teddy and Nikki have each other's back and support and protect each other, even if it means giving their life to save the other. They are the modern day Bonnie and Clyde. Even Mick gets in to protect Nikki, with his safety and protection suggestions which Nikki balked to at first but acquiesced to the need being in the Sinatra family now. She was forewarned by Roz. But V.P. in S.I. really? Teddy seems to be maturing in this story but wanting to get married???? Really??? I can't wait to see how this turns out.

I enjoy reading about Teddy and Nikki...so interesting watching their personal relationship and mob lifestyle intermingle...Teddy walking the stairs to becoming boss...not top boss because that position will never be taken from Mick The Tick! But Nikki will continue to be more of an equal partner to him than the other Sinatra and Gabrini wives.Ok, definitely need some background on this Teddy and Monk bromance😁....Mr Monk has captured my interest....please don't let him be a throwaway character! I kept thinking is this the man who will capture Gloria's love and devotion?🤔 Has he perhaps unbeknown to Mick and Teddy met Gloria?And about Joey and Irene....not trusting her...don't believe that Mick or Roz does either....Mick will be watching her & digging deeper into her background...for Joey's sake, I would hope she does have the best intentions toward him...perhaps she could maybe have an unexpected illness and pass away; leaving a grieving Joey, who grows more mature...better than Joey being used and regressing to his former behavior....When Sal showed up at Joey's house, it crossed my mind that Irene was an old girlfriend of his...And back to Nikki...whom I like...but🤔...the job Mick gave her...I am going to have to reread to see if I missed her having the qualifications and experience for it....Joey was very intuitive about Mick regarding Nikki....Gloria has had her Mick's princess crown taken and placed on Nikki...that's probably going to put some ugly in the roadI enjoyed this book. It felt like it was setting a foundation for some new drama for Mick and family. And I can't wait to read more! 😚

“Learn to code” in the title is misleading. My daughter was really disappointed that the book doesn’t actually do any real teaching. Instead it’s basically cute stories about women who code. Not helpful at all.

I bought this book after hearing about it from friends and reading rave reviews. I have an almost 6-year old who told me the other day she "loves" this book - although I think it's for the high school age demographic, I love that my daughter will pick it up and read it a bit at a time. She is learning about something I can't teach her about firsthand, and which will undoubtedly become central to education for her generation. I hope that it inspires her to learn to code - and I love that she is growing up thinking that this is something that "girls just do".

This is a good book that encourages coding not only for girls but for everyone. I am a man who teaches coding but loved the information in the book, and learned a lot from reading it. I recommend this book for everyone interested in coding.

If you, your child (of any gender) or basically anyone you know is interested in learning 'to code' - get them this book! It's a brilliant, easy to read, entertaining, and highly educational book. This encapsulates the idea of learning the logic of computer programing independently of any particular language - a brilliant way to teach the basics. The incorporation of the fictional GWC (Girls Who Code) girls from the fiction books adds a fun twist to help move the reader from chapter to chapter. This helps motivate and connect the content and makes this an engaging read rather than a textbook. The quality of information, however, makes it the best 'intro to coding' textbook for this age group I've ever seen. Highly recommend.

Reading Reshma Saujani's book was so much fun for me! It gave interesting history of computers and explained all the introductory concepts of coding sufficiently. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is looking to gain an introduction to computer science or is trying to encourage a young girl to do so.

I am a woman who has been in the software industry for almost 20 years. I have seen the lack of women in this field and I wonder why. This book was recommended to me by a coworker as a great gift for girls. My 12 year old granddaughter really liked it and seemed excited to read it. I would be thrilled if she got interested in coding, but even if she just dabbles for fun it will be good for her to realize that no field is off limits to her because she is a girl.

This book is wonderful introduction to computer science for girls who are totally new to coding. It offers a book version of basic coding principles taught in the actual Girls Who Code programs and was written by the founder herself. I highly recommended buying it for girls so they can be introduced to CS and really feel inspired to do amazing things in STEM! Reshma Saujani's book will have girls running to the closest computer to start coding! The graphics are adorable, and you are bound to be impressed by it!
