This is a WONDERFUL book. Not only is it thorough, its so wonderfully well-written in a light and easy tone. You do not have to be a physicist or mathematician to read this book - it avoids formulas in favor of real-world laymen's explanations. It also offers real-world experiments to explore the concepts yourself. If you're a curious science fan, a teacher, a struggling student - this book is a MUST for you. Don't think twice - get it now. I wish I had found this book a decade ago.

A truly great book for learning a wide breadth of both basic and complex optical physics ideas. As a physicist and patent attorney, I have used this book as a reference for many years with great satisfaction and great enjoyment. I have given this book as a gift to people who have a curiosity of optics and all of my recipients have truly enjoyed learning from this book. I also recommend this book to fellow patent attorneys who need concise and clear descriptions of optical physics for their patent drafting. I see that there is a one star rating for this book on the Amazon website. As a person who has used, appreciated, and enjoyed this book for nearly three decades, I do not understand how a one star review can be given. This is my go to book when I need a refresher, when I need to learn something new, when I need to teach, and when I just want to enjoy a great optics book. Buy this book, use it, learn from it, enjoy it.

This is the best textbook I ever had, and I sold it for some ($$$) at the end of a semester to buy a bus ticket. Very mad; I miss the book, but it's so expensive. It's amazing the way the author incorporates all sorts of literary allusions in this physics book, such as offering an interesting hypothesis on the optical illusion of the egyptians getting swallowed by the red sea while chasing the jews. Every chapter, light becomes a metaphor for so many things, the way we see, the obstacles, etc.

Awesome book, I admire the knowledge of authors and the way they present material. It is full of examples from real life, clear explanations, and it revealed the beauty of optics to me.

Cheap, good condition and what I needed. WHat lese could you ask for. It provided me with the information needed to succeed in my class. Highly suggested if they havent made any newer editions.

About the Author

Luigi Barzini, was born in Milan, Italy, in 1908. After completing his studies in Italy and at Columbia University, he worked for two New York newspapers. He returned to Italy in 1930 to become a correspondent for Corriere della Sera. In 1940 he was confined by the Fascists. With the Allied liberation he returned to publishing and founded Il Globo. Subsequently he served as the chief editor of several newspapers and magazines. His books include Americans Are Alone in the World (1958), From Caesar to the Mafia (1971), and Peking to Paris (1973). He died in 1984.

Im not sure how I feel about this book. I bought it as a gift for my sig other. We are both Italian and I read an excerpt on Delancy Place. I thought it would be an interesting view of the history of Italy and Italian people. But this guy is very ambivalent about being Italian. It was almost a bit insulting.Its hard to describe but its like he is describing animals in a zoo, or some weird species that he is trying to describe to other people. Im not too thrilled.

It's all true.... even if the book "The Italians" by Luigi Barzini was written 53 years ago. Even now there is still a behaviour such as that described in the book. It is quite true that some things have been improved, and a number of ways of thinking have changed, but in principle, way of living and thinking are more or less the same. Thank you.

I heard of this book 40 years ago when a TV version won an Emmy award. I was inspired to read it after my most recent trip to Italy. Growing up as an Italian-American, I wondered why my people acted the way they do, and this book provides valuable insight. Barzini graduated from Columbia U., and it shows in his command of the English language. This book is a classic, but like most classics, it's old, so while much of it is timeless, other parts are out of date, both culturally and politically. However, if one wants to gain a grounding in the Italian culture, this book is a very good place to start.

Husband loved it.

An in depth history of the Italian country and its people from North to South. This book examines every facet of Italian character. Enjoyed it so much!!. In addition the books are in excellent condition.

I am currently reading this book and love it. The writer covers vast periods of history with a concise manner and, yet, provides details. I would recommend this book to those who are interested in the Italian culture.

I have lent this book to so many people in the past ten years and the last one did not return it, so I purchased this one for myself to keep.It has always been a favorite and portrays the Italian people in a most beautiful manner. I have read several of Mr. Barzini's literary efforts and find him to be a fascinating story teller.
