The book is well written and has LOTS OF COLOR PHOTO'S. Most are contributed by a East Coast Dealer who is no longer in the business (according to the internet) Tons of bad PR if you look up his name....( fake jewelry, poor quality and over priced; etc) Not my judgment but yelp..... This is a book published by Schiffer Publishing and as usual it has a few editing problems,,,,and at least 2 of these are REPEAT PROBLEMS from other published works by them.... photo's upside down,,,wrong captions on photo's,,, etc. Just plain sloppy. Overall I enjoyed reading and looking at the pics. It gives you a "mouth watering view of what's out there,,, or what was out there . Just realize that FAKES are more FREQUENT NOW than ever,,, and BUYER BEWARE...... Know your dealer and research the maker ( check for other pieces made by him/her)

Wonderfully illustrated

As a turquoise addict, I had to have this book. I am especially interested in telling different mines apart, and Chinese turquoise from American. This book did not help much with that. In fact I am more confused than ever! I have no idea why he has a map of the world on page 41,don't we all know what the world looks like??? Ditto for the New Mexico landscape photo on page 6 when most of the US turquoise comes from Nevada! Some of he turquoise types have a paragraph or so about them with lots of photos, some have a couple of sentences with NO photos at all. I suspect that not even the "experts" can, in most cases, tell one from the other, The photos show a bewilderingly huge variation within each mine. In fact the photos are about the only thing I can recommend about this book: lots and LOTS of good quality photos, although sometimes there are way too many photos crammed on a page while other items get a full page all to themselves. Apparently every single item of JR's Southwestern Trading Post are in here, along with a few others. At one point the author recommends scratching a turquoise with a nail to see what ??? hardness I guess. I doubt anyone is going to allow you to take a nail to their items. Issues of stabilized, treated, natural and fake turquoise are all dealt with in a very perfunctory manner. Basically you are supposed to "trust a reputable dealer".I guess it all boils down to "visual appeal' which was what I have been going by for years anyway.

Kate Larson is one of the most talented yarn-wizards I have ever met. And she is a generous teacher and such a kind-hearted individual. Her book is all of these things. Wonderful information, lots of great hints for managing your spinning practice, and fantastic information about using wool for fiber art. I am a fairly new spinner and Kate's tips--everything from picking a fleece (I'm reviewing that right now for a fleece-buying excursion) to carding and combs to actually spinning--is so helpful. Beautiful photos. Indispensable information. I love this book.

If I could give it 100 stars I would. I have taken spinning classes from Kate and she approaches this book like she does everything. She puts so much love and excitement in what she does. Many times in class I just listen to her talk about all the things she has done and about all the different yarns. Her enthusiasm is contagious. Buy this book. It is a great read.

This is a beautiful book that was clearly written by someone with a deep knowledge and love of her craft. I am relatively new to spinning and working with wool, but I think this is one of those books that I will return to again and again for a long time. It is very readable and easy to understand (the great photographs also really helped me visualize everything that she is describing), but it is also packed full of well-researched information and thoughtful tips that will be interesting and helpful to newbies and seasoned handspinners alike. This book has already taught me so much about the practical, how-to aspects of preparing and spinning wool, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much it has also enriched my understanding of the wider context: sheep breeds and why they matter to handspinners, how woolen mills operate, etc. I'm so thankful to have this by my side as a reference guide when I am working, and when I'm not using it, I am happy to leave it sitting out on my coffee table (there are some seriously gorgeous fleeces and yarns in the photos!).

Very well organized, great information. I've been spinning for about six years now, and got a lot of good information from this book. Mostly because of her clear explanations and great illustrations. As both a spindle and a wheel spinner, I absolutely loved the woolen and worsted drafts illustrated both for wheel AND for spindle. There are subtle drafting differences with the spindle. Highly recommended.

Kate Larson is an excellent spinning instructor and this was very good.

Kate Larson is such a gifted shepherdess, spinner, designer, knitter and all around wonderful person. Now add author to the list. This is a wonderful resource for "wool crafters" at all levels. Highly recommend

Kate Larson really knows her spinning. I have taken classes from her and she is a delightful and very knowledgeful master spinner.

If you're thinking this is redundant with the big Spain book, yes there's a lot of the same content, but this one is SO much easier to carry around - sometimes you want to be a bit more surreptitious with your guide book - and means you don't have to rip up the other book. Also the color photographs are beautiful. We used this book nearly from cover to cover in Barcelona last month, making heavy use of the walking tours. Well worth it. I need one of these for a few other cities.

I have bought several of Rick's travel guides and I will admit that they are a very accurate glance at each city. However, this last trip guide left me shocked and very disappointed "with Rick." His restaurant choices were not very tasty or clean, and he left out one of the most exciting and beautiful places in Barcelona: Tibidabo mountain/amusement park! (He described it in one sentence! :( )Tibidabo had one of the most unbelievable views of the city, Monserrat and the surrounding areas --- you can literally see for miles. It was isolated and gorgeous. Be sure you take the elevator to the top of the church steeple for an even BETTER view!So yes, get this book if you want some insight to Barcelona and see all the cheap places and TONS OF GAUDI museums that Rick makes you go to....but also try someone else's guides to get more out of Barcelona. :)

We traveled to Barcelona for nine nights in September of 2017. Terrifically helpful, with ideas about where to stay, what to see, and where to eat. It's more oriented to the well-heeled traveler than to someone who is on a tight budget, especially when it comes to eating places. Fortunately, there are lots of local restaurants not on the list that were inexpensive with pretty good food. We couldn't always afford the top restaurants described. Basically went through hotels.com to find a hotel, since everything Rick Steves recommended was full up two months ahead of time. Expect any restaurant Rick recommends to be very crowded, since so many people pay attention to his recommendations. Not very many obscure places, and the minute Mr. Steves would recommend a place it would no longer be obscure and uncrowded. Great and helpful book, though. Hints throughout about how to avoid lines and crowds which were very useful.

For such a small guide book, this pocket manual has been a lifesaver. It is detailed enough to help me plan an entire itinerary. The guided walking tours seem fool-proof. Since it is so small, I can fit this book into my small cross-body purse for reference when I'm actually walking around the city. Highly, highly recommend any of his books and travel accessories.

Great resource. I read thru it before our trip and again while I was in Barcelona. The maps were very handy to have and his suggested walks were great. You could see a lot in a reasonably short walk. We really liked the walk on the Psg. de Gracia.

Awesome guide! Includes a pull-out map that is invaluable. The "walks" with where to go and what to see are perfect for the tourist. Sites are rated by must see, nice to see, and see if you have time. It has info on the Metro, getting advance tickets to attractions, best tapas places, everything! Perfect!

This little pocket guide was so valuable while traveling through Barcelona! I was able to tuck it into my purse and could have maps and information at my fingertips if needed. It wasn't too big or bulky, so you didn't "have to carry it" throughout the city. It does only have the "big" attractions in it, but that's OK. Saved us from spending money on one "tourist trap"!!

We took this book on our recent trip to Barcelona. It provided the perfect amount of information for the three days we visited the city, and was a wonderful guide through the amazing sights, particularly The Sagrada Familia and Park Guell.

After re-reading Gone With the Wind and Rhett Buttler's People and reading Ruth's Journey for the first time (the three books in a row) I finally understood what I don't like about McCaig's books. The writing is very good, but so... cold. It's mostly a description of facts with a little feeling thrown here and there. GWTW is pure feeling and that's what I love about it. I like McCaig's books, but I'm never going to love them. I always feel like something's missing...

This is a depressing book. Never finds any relief from hard down sadness.The first half drags, but does pick up in the second half. However it stays depressing.I admire the author, as it is well written and historically accurate. It was a depressing and shameful time in history, and the author showcases this in Ruth's story.Kept hoping Ruth would find a smidgen of happiness. After her husband was murdered and her only child was sold then died, Ruth never loved or was loved again.Although Ruth's story ends long before she dies, the reader knows her life never gets any better.If the intent of the author was to make the descendents of this era of US history feel shame or anger, it falls short. It is just too depressing. It rams the horrible to the point, that it is overload.I am sorry I read this book, something I rarely feel.I do applaud the author for putting this story together. Obviously he is a gifted writer. Way above average. But in my opinion this book is not a good look.

A true gone with the fan will not enjoy this book. It was very confusing in the beginning and most of the way through. To many people thrown together to fast with not enough character developement. Truth is the book is barely about mammy. Also the copycats that were between Scarlet and Solange which will be explained away by granddaughter taking after grandmother. It was parts of GWTW just rebooted. There is also a part which implies Ruth or Mammy knew of the Butlers before she came to Tara. In GWTH during the drapery scene Scarlet says Rhett has the money and Mammy says who dat a yankee? Now If Mammy was so traumatized by what the Butlers did to her family I would think she would know who Rhett Butler is. Considering in this book mammy meets Rhett in the library after his and Scarlets talk.

Horrible would be one word to describe it. Only picked it up because the author did such an amazing job with Rhett Butler's People. The novel starts in 3rd person then somehow unbeknownst to the reader it winds up being in first person being told by Mammy herself. The book is a jip a cheap rendition of Gone With the Wind and being a Gone With the Wind enthusiast it is an insult. Skip this one it doesn't add anything to the histories of the Gone With the Wind characters (though at times it does read as a history book) and it is not believable. I should have listened to the reviews and skipped this one.

This book was actually pretty good . I'm surprised by all the bad reviews , I think people expect Margaret Mitchell to rise up from the grave and write this . This is one persons idea of what Mammy's life might have been like. I do want to say that one reviewer said that Mammy was raised in Ellen's bedroom but the author took care of that saying that was what Ellen's mother told people. I wonder if that reviewer even read the book all the way through if she did she would've seen that and not use that as a negative comment in her review. Some people are very protective of certain works that they love , but that shouldn't stop other people from giving the story a chance . I did and I'm glad I did . I would've hated to not have read this fun, historical work because of other people's negative comments . Give it a chance , and remember Margaret Mitchell is gone , but this author has given this wonderful character a voice . I think Ms. Mitchell would have been proud and also had a good chuckle over this book . Give it a shot, have an open mind and you might just find you like it. People need to stop taking things so seriously and just enjoy life and this story .

Almost finished with the book. Loved the beginning. I felt like the author opened the story well. But now that I'm almost at the end, I feel like the author is speeding through the years and not really developing the story. And it would've been nice to have developed more about how Mammy felt. But despite all this, it is nice to have another book surrounding the Gone With The Wind characters.As far as buying from Amazon... No issues!

The characters didn't come alive to me, so I struggled to figure out who was who. The story was interesting and so I read the book. I think I didn't really like the author's style..

After reading RHETT BUTLER'S PEOPLE I was very excited to read this book. I was not disappointed. I would describe it as a Prequel to GONE WITH THE WIND. I thought all of the characters were developed in a way that is original, but makes sense in light of Margaret Mitchell's version. I definitely recommend this book.

This "practical guide" contains a wealth of information. Chapters on Materials Safety Data Sheets and labeling, training programs and drills, flammability and combustibility, storage of laboratory chemicals, federal regulations, safe disposal of chemical waste, laboratory design, and fume hoods were the most useful, in my opinion. The chapter that listed causes of accidents was not very helpful, except as a checklist of things to avoid, and the penultimate chapter on using audiovisual materials in safety training was short and outdated. The fume hood chapter, which was actually a good read, was obviously written by someone who knows a lot about chemical fume hoods and should probably be required reading for anyone involved in building or renovating a laboratory.
