New Poets of Native Nations is a wonderfully conceived collection, full of exciting juxtapositions, rich language and a fine equipoise between generosity and restraint. It’s safe to say New Poets of Native Nations is an essential read.â€â€•Paste Magazine “The artists collected in New Poets of Native Nations occupy a powerful role culturally, and a book like this, at this moment, acts as a looking-glass for white-dominated culture. As challenges to the status quo of global capital, environmental degradation, and underserved communities rise in pitch, the perspectives held by these poets offer vital reading.â€â€•3:AM Magazine “A gorgeous volume of poetry.â€â€•The Coil “[A] marvelous and much needed new anthology.â€â€•Shelf Awareness “Essential. . . . Through this first anthology of US Native poets since 1988, Erdrich offers readers a path into a ‘brilliantly lit dimension’ that has long been obscured by colonialism in the worlds of academia and cultural production.â€â€•Publishers Weekly, starred review“An immensely important anthology that belongs in every library.â€â€•Booklist, starred review

"New Poets of Native Nations" features 21 talented authors associated with various tribes that all share the fact of being indigenous. However, each individual tackles their diverse life experiences in unique and captivating ways. For example, Margaret Noodin writes all poetry in Anishinaabemowin in a column on the left and has the English translation on the right. She says she writes to “resist and repair the world, to rise up and be renewed.†Tommy Pico employs calculated uses of abbreviations and purposeful improper grammar and spelling to tell his stories. I love that the forms, messages, and rhythm vary so much between poets, but as you read more and more of a specific author, you can feel more and more of what they are trying to say and why they are saying it this way.It is evident that they are not defined as Native, but that being Native has impacted their lens on how they view the world. Reading poems such as “Linear Process†by Gwen Nell Westerman has stretched my mind to how one can communicate messages. It doesn’t have to be formal, it can words spaced and punctuation used to put emphasis on feelings. For this poem in particular, it takes the concept of colonization and its effects and puts it in a big picture form that is easy to understand but also takes some thinking to analyze nuances she places. This is my first time diving into poetry, and I believe it is worth it to pick up since you can get out of it what you put into it, which can be a renewed mentality on diverse viewpoints.
Great, modern Native poetry. So glad this book exists!
This anthology pulls together the voices of twenty-one Native poets, all of whose first books were published after 2000. Erdrich describes the poetry gathered here as “poetry of a new time — an era of witness, of coming into voice, an era of change and of political and cultural resurgence…†It is drawn from poets from the 566 Native Nations, but not one not representative of “binary notions of an easily digestible ‘American Indian’ history or tradition…â€The poetry within this volume is diverse; it’s difficult to capture the essence of such an anthology in a short description. But many of the poets within have written poetry that melds the personal with the political.Several of the poets interrogate the question of how to write poetry in the language of oppressors. In Psalm 137, enslaved Israelites rejected their captors’ demand that they sing for them, asking, “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?†That same question recurs among those whose ancestors were forbidden to speak native languages and who were forced to send their children to English-speaking schools.
The New Poets of Native Nations is an anthology with 21 collective authors writing about their thoughts and experiences of being indigenous people in America. Each author brings to light several perspectives and ideas about indigenous people throughout their representative nations. The poets right about themes of the past as well as political themes meant for making a stance on today’s issues involving Native Americans. The many different writing styles in this anthology promote a wide variety of poems for readers to connect with. Although some may be difficult to read due to their outlandish styles, they show that poetry and art have no rules or error within their form. Its different style holds their own identity in relation to the author, which is what’s so unique about this book. Overall, this anthology brought to mind many different aspects of Native American life in the 21st century. The wide array of themes and styles brings individuality and a different read for every poem, even if the themes were relatively the same. If you’re interested in poetry, love making meaning through rich metaphors, and are open to a wide variety of perspectives then this book is definitely worth the read.
"New Poets of Native Nations" is an amalgamation of poetry from Native poets. The book is setup so that you can learn a little bit about each poet, and then see their work. The unpredictable quality of the content and form of the poems was what helped me engage with the book. This unexpected quality is reflected, poet to poet, but also within many individual poems. An example of this would be Karenne Wood's poem "My Standard Response", four sections make up the poem, and not one looks like the other in terms of form. I know very little about poetry and I didn't have a favorite poem until I read "This Island on Which I Love You" by Brandy Nalani McDougall, which is included in this book. McDougall's poem was like reading a long book in less than a minutes time in that I felt connected to the speaker as I would having read a whole book about them. In terms of recommending this book to a certain audience, I can only attest that my knowledge of the culture and experiences of Native peoples, and the genre of poetry, is minimal but growing, and I think this book has helped me expand that knowledge.
