From Booklist

This practical, how-to manual provides a breakdown of the theories, rules, and issues that anyone cataloging school library materials needs to know. The first part is brief and provides a basic foundation for the rest of the book. It includes a condensed history of cataloging, basic tools for copy cataloging, and information on theory and the MARC record. The second part is devoted to application--"the art of cataloging." Using clear summaries and a nice variety of examples, this section also offers exercises (answers are located in an appendix). This edition is a substantial improvement over the 2002 edition: it is better organized, completely updated, and has a more comprehensive index. Topics such as classification of graphic novels and an expanded hint sheet listing the most commonly used MARC tags are among the many nice additions. This is a must for school libraries and academic libraries that have K-12 collections. Heather HeydukCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This was my first textbook concerning MARC records. As an Information and Library Services student and having never worked in a library setting I really found this textbook helpful. Of course, I had to use it for a class. But, it served it's purpose. It's mainly to get you started on the basics of cataloging and helps you begin to understand how MARC records work. I'm glad I purchased, rather than rented because I will be using it to help memorize some things for the future.

Yes, as others have said, this book is oddly organized and not an easy read. I do, however highly recommend it for students of library science. Cataloging itself is not easy, and I have found this book, combined with focused study time, to be one of the most informative and helpful on the subject. Hopefully by the next edition, they will get some of the more cosmetic issues fixed.

This was the assigned text book for an ILS cataloging class. I found it somewhat confusing and out of order. Though the authors explain why they chose to present the information this way I found I had to read sections repeatedly and was frequently flipping back and forth in order to understand a concept fully. Admittedly MARC tagging is a difficult topic and a challenge to present with any continuity. Still, though it served its purpose, this was not one of my favorite textbooks.

This guide, while a bit dated, is still very helpful to beginning catalogers, explaining details that aren't found elsewhere. My one big complaint is that its poorly copy-edited. The devil is in the details, and when you are looking at MARC code, the details are important. The copy-editor did not thoroughly go over the examples of MARC subfields being taught, and I found a dozen or more errors and inconsistencies, which is a pain when you are trying to figure out how to interpret MARC subfields.

I ordered the wrong book. It was actually more interesting than I had thought.

Like any other standard textbook. I had to have it for a college course.

If your instructor chooses this book for your class, guess what? You're stuck with it. If you're looking for a way to learn Cataloging and Classification on your own, look elsewhere! Like someone else mentioned who reviewed this book, the book is occasionally confusing -- especially so in Chapter 5 on Classification. It's obvious that no one edited this section because the explanations regarding using the corresponding DDC14 are worse than not helpful. The publisher should allow someone trying to learn Dewey the opportunity to provide feedback on this text. Perhaps if one was in a classroom environment where students could ask the instructor what the authors were trying to say...? I'm taking a time-out from yelling at this book to write this vent. I'm not doubting that these ladies are great catalogers, but their ability to communicate the process to others is lousy.

Catalog It! is a great resource for people working in libraries who need to understand the coding language used in entering catalog records. Kaplan's book makes it easier to understand and implement writing a MARC21 record.
