This is an amazing book. I teach Excel, and I don't have time to Google things for hours to learn my trade. Besides the fact that this was the ONLY dedicated Excel 2010 book I could find (I didn't look too hard though), I have to say it is truly a stellar book. Well-organized, great examples, clear and clean writing style - a MUST HAVE!!!So why only 4 stars?Because even though the examples are terrific - they do not include a CD with the book, nor could I find the examples online. Worse, I wanted to recreate the charts in the book but most of the pictures only show the resulting charts and not the data that went into making them. Even a photo of the data sets would allow me to recreate them when I read it - and this is not a book you just are going to pick up and read out of boredom; you want to read for understanding and mastery.I have Mr. Excel's Pivot Table and Number Crunching book; it too is absolutely fabulous but suffers the same problem. In that books's case, the exercise files are available online but they simply do not correspond to the text very well - I spent a LOT of time massaging the files until they bear a reasonable resemblance to the original, but I shouldn't have to spend hours at that.Bill Jelen, are you listening? Your stuff is FABULOUS man, but you've got to beef up the example engine.Thanks,Mike

Looked through all the Excel books at Barnes & Noble yesterday, and this one seemed by far the most helpful.The author doesn't just talk about HOW to create a certain chart, he describes WHY you would want to use one chart vs another to communicate info.I will probably buy the Kindle version so I can easily search it. However because it's so visual this would be a good one to have in pulp as well.I particularly liked:1) the paired comparison chart how-to, with the examples from how Mad Magazine used them2) the positive-neutral-negative chart example from Gene Zelazny? at McKinsey

I got my money's worth from this book in the first few minutes of reading it. I sometimes find Excel's charting feature hard to use. I am a scientist and therefore think in terms of x and y, in terms of dependent and independent variables, and not in terms of "categories" and "series", like Excel. This means I used to have to spend more time than I like getting a graph or chart to look just right for a professional presentation.Not so anymore! This book really helps you quickly understand how Excel gets your data into a graph. It does not waste your time with a lot of verbose text.If you get the Kindle version, you can easily search for just the information you need at the moment. I have the Kindle version, but I have been reading it on an iPad in the computer lab at my university. It is so easy to use and much better than carrying around a heavy book.

...this book really helped me at work to represent data in exceptional ways but not so complex that you lose the audience. My managers at least didn't have time for elaborate demos on how to understand what they were seeing. I just graphed as instructed in the book and BOOM they changed their strategies as needed.

I am not really using this for stocks, but it is insightful and will help me get some of the rather mundane charts in Excel somewhat more appealing and useful.

I used this guide tfor three years out of the college library. After I graduated I bought my own copy for future reference.

Works for what I needed. Not exhaustive and leaves something to be desired but overall short and informational for a novice

The year is 2000, i had just finished second grade in June. The month is July, and we have just been told there was going to be a new pokemon game. I didn't really care at the time, but when i got Pokemon Silver in 2000 i couldn't have been happier. I got myself the primia guide book originally back then and saw i could travel to Kanto, where the original pokemon took place AND could battle my charter from Red Blue and Yellow. 10 years later I am a senior in high school when i hear they are going to remake gold and silver!!! i was so happy they were my favorite pokemon games as a kid, i liked how it changed from day to night in the games. It took me three years to finally get heartgold. and as like before i had to get a guide to go with it. I was unhappy with how they were both split up but in the end was happy. I couldn't believe how much changed! It then inspired me to fix my original copy of silver....great guide book to explain on the changes with Gold and Silver and how they were similar too!

With 3 pokemaniacs in the house, this book is getting a lot of use, unfortunately we've been sorely disappointed with this offering.Here some of the Good, the Bad, and the... Meh. (I'll be updating this as the book gets more use. Updates are denoted with asterisks.)Update added:* 4/28/2010 *** 5/15/2010 **-----The Good:Yay a index for the pokedex! Another plus attacks that require contact are identified.* Nice page recommending 6 pokemon that can learn HMs, Flash, and Headbutt for field use (though a complete list of available pokemon would have been preferred). *-----The Bad:The book arrived with the edge of the exterior lamination already pealing off and, of course, use has spread this. Also, the laminate had a flaw, a hole half the size of a pencil eraser, even before application. Construction quality does not seem the best. * Bubbles are appearing in the middle of the lamination and even with careful handling the lamination has rolled as much as an inch from the edge. *The walk-through is very basic and requires a lot of backtracking because you get information about events that require much later triggers. Page pointers are provided but a linear walk-through would have been a lot more useful and less frustrating.Lots of wasted space. Pages are often "packed full" of empty space, thanks to a wasteful layout, and useless, oversized, page-filling images, like the worthless photorama that takes up pages 2-17. The book could probably have been 1/3 thinner with a more economic layout (or, better yet, been packed with more info). Or to put it another way: which would you prefer, a page size image of Lance the Dragon Trainer and 1/2 page with 20 identical magicarps vs a page sized route map and breeding advice?Region and area maps are tiny. Many are only 1 to 2 inches wide or tall. Some are even less than 1 by 1. The Cliff Edge Gate map image (p126), an area about 35 game steps square, is the size of a postage stamp, but don't worry, Eusine's image on the next page is twice as big so you can spot all his vital details... or not.Pokemon information is incomplete. No Egg, TM or HM moves, egg groups, and Togepi's description is missing Extrasensory, an awesome starting move.Pages 26-57, the "Primer", is has tons of info but the table of contents has only 6 entries and there's no index. Try finding the radio schedule quickly or the growing berries info.No information about pokemon in trainer battles. Only the "boss" (like Gym Leaders and the Final Four) pokemon are identified.No information about pokegear callers. I.E. Do you really want this person's phone number? You can't erase them once you say yes and most callers are just plain annoying. * These callers actually reduce the number of "goody" calls (callers that will give you something) and the battle callers won't become worthwhile until badge 7 or 8. *No info about breeding, gender color differences, locations of items found by the item finder, Ruins of Alph puzzles solutions, shiny pokemon, or battle impact on stats.Hints/Notes are sometimes dropped without rhythm or reason, so finding them when you need a refresher can be difficult.Less than 1/6 a page is spent on trading and nothing is mentioned about trading pokemon from GBA games (i.e. you will need to get to the Pal Park in Kanto, vol 2).* The contest events lack any specifics on what is required to win (beat x time, collect x flags, beat magikarp size x, etc.) and no winning answers to quizzes. Descriptions of Pokeathlon events don't tell which tri-event they are part of - Speed, Skill, Power, Stamina, or Jump. *** As another reviewer points out, all the dexes are limited to Johto outcomes. Pokemon, berries, items, etc. are listed as trade only even though they will become available in the Kanto half of the game. They should be listed as "trade or see Kanto guide". **-----The Meh:The "poster" is an oversized postcard slightly smaller than the book. Thicker material nice, size not so much. * There is a two page map (p20-1) that is obviously twice as big, so the point of the map side of the postcard seems lost. The other side is the attack vs type matrix, but this could have been printed on the inside of the cover which is blank. *-----Overall** This guide's information is sketchy and incomplete, sometimes difficult to locate, and sometime wrong or outright misleading (such as ignoring Kanto availability in pokedex entries).There appears to be no reasonable reason for this information to have its own book. If this format is any indication, a consolidation with volume 2 should have required no more than a tighter, less wasteful layout of the walk-through and advice sections plus, generously worst case, another 50 pages and 2 or 3 dollars added to the price. Everything else is probably duplicated and hopefully more accurate in volume 2. For comparison, the platinum standard of guides, Versus, walks through both regions in just 100 pages and tells you EVERYTHING about Crystal, exact item placements, all trainer battles, etc. This guide uses 200 pages and covers only the bare minimum of Johto's pertinent information.Bottom line, this guide feels, at best, like a half-hearted effort that, more often than not, forces you to go to the internet to get guidance to fill the holes. Not exactly why one buys a game guide. **-----** If you are lucky enough to own the Versus Crystal guide, expect some significant changes but you'll find the guide can still be very helpful. **

If you've picked up past incarnations of the Pokemon guides, you'll be familiar with the walkthrough format. Sometimes these guides seem a little ot of order, but there is a helpful "recommended route" section at the front of the book that will help you identify and determine where you are and what you need to do next. I still think they should put a guide to each section of the map with a list of all pokemon available in that section and instructions for catching them if there are any tricks (i.e. Night time, After getting a certain item, etc.)Overall it's a good guide, the price is right here and if you are looking for a hard copy of the walkthrough you aren't gonna do much better.

When I pre-ordered this guide, there was NO notation that this was just Volume One. Sure, this is the way the Diamond and Pearl guides came out, but I was relieved that Platinum was just one volume, complete in itself.The pros for this guide: maps, I suppose. And info on sidegames, but only those available during the first half of the game.The cons: Worthless Pokedex. Not even egg moves! No info on any Move Tutors except for Headbutt, because these will be in the second volume. I kept flipping back and forth, because of the non-linear "do this here before that event, then come back later for these things..." descriptions for each section. No info on trainers, except gym leaders and your rival. By now most Pokemon players know about shiny Pokemon, but this guide doesn't bother to mention the phenomenon at all - it just states that the Red Gyarados is a shiny Pokemon, with no explanation. The guide doesn't even mention the odds of shinies, or that every Pokemon has a shiny form.And how do you catch Suicune?!? It is a Pokemon in the first half of the game, but the 'dex says you need to transfer it in from D/P/Pt.I could keep listing the problems with this guide, but it's not worth my time and energy - or yours.I found myself relying on my old Gold/Silver guide from Versus Books to play the game - and it's a decade old! IT listed each and every trainer you will find, as well as their Pokemon. IT lists monies and rewards received from battles. IT has far more details on HM and TM moves than this new waste of money.If you want a guide, either go online, or just wait until Part 2 comes out in a few weeks and get both then. Or, if Part 2 ends up like the Part 2 for Diamond and Pearl, you may not need this Part 1 at all.I'm not annoyed at Amazon for this waste. This is all on the Pokemon Company, for sheer greed and laziness. The 6-week delay for part 2 is unnecessary - after all, this game's been out in Japan since last September. I only wish that another company would write guides for these games - the competition would encourage the Pokemon Company to do it right the first time! Otherwise, I'll just use the on-line guides from now on.

I bought this book to help me with my primary statement for my medical school application. This was my second time applying and while I felt there were some other things wrong with my first application, I believe my primary statement the first time around really did not set me apart. I have a mediocre/low GPA, pretty good MCAT score, but lots of life experience and extracurricular activities so I felt the primary statement was my best bet to really show medical schools who I am. I must have written a pretty good essay because I received 5 interview invitations within the first 2 months after submitting my primary and was recently accepted into one of my top choice medical schools.The first couple of chapters of this book address what medical schools are looking for in an essay and how to make your own life story come across in the primary statement. It helps you organize your thoughts and experiences, guiding you through structuring an essay that show some real emotion. I found that working through the brainstorming activities was key in developing my essay and I strongly suggest that everyone why buys this book does so as well. The final parts of the book are example essays of past admitted medical students. This is where I think the book is a little lacking. Most of the essays are from students who were accepted into Yale, Harvard, Johns Hopkins...you get the picture. Obviously the other parts of the applications for these students, such as MCAT and GPA, must have been very outstanding as well. I believe that most of these students would have been accepted into medical school regardless of their primary statement. Even though many essays described experiences that the average applicant cannot relate to, I believe the thought process highlighted of why these experiences make the student a good candidate for becoming a doctor were the real key here. I found many hidden gems and inspirations among some of the essays and they allowed me to see how a successful essay should be structured.I believe this book was they key why I was so incredibly successful in my application process and I highly recommend it to anyone working on their application to medical school!

I am a pre-medicine student at a university who is preparing to apply to medical school and this book is really helpful with writing the notorious personal statement. It gives many sample essays that were written by actual people who got into medical school and it lists the strengths and weaknesses of the essays. The first few chapters are a walk-through on brainstorming and writing your personal statement. This book also includes tips for the even more notorious med school interview session that you will be expected to attend should you get your foot in the door.

This book is a perfect guide for writing higher level essays to prepare me for a medical program. I love how clear the directions are and the examples are very clear and concise.

There were quotes that I read aloud because they resonated with me in my journey – in the past and where I am today!Hollenstein welcomes you back to yourself in a sense. As someone who had lost over 100 pounds years ago, only to find it again when I stopped all forms of self-care, this book served as a permission slip for me. Permission to reconnect through meditation and being present. Permission to have a different relationship with food that wasn’t anchored in an all-or-nothing mentality. Her insights are not prescriptive but yet, simple to remember. I now find myself checking to see if that last taste was as good as the first. I leave food on my plate. I eat only when I’m hungry, not because I’m “supposed” to.I’ve only begun to scratch the surface of the wealth of information Hollenstein has given us. I know that I will be re-visiting this one to stay grounded and connected with myself and the world around me.

I greatly appreciate Hollenstein's critical eye towards what she calls "magical eating," the idea that we will somehow achieve a perfect body if we just ate this food or that food or whatever the latest dieting trend is. Hollenstein's vast experience as a nutritional therapist, registered dietician and a meditation teacher is woven throughout the book.A great book on how to have a better relationship with food that also teaches you self-compassion as you work with your body's idiosyncrasies.

A very insightful book, Eat to Love exposes the poisonous diet culture that pervades our world and offers a saner way of exploring nourishment and our relationship with eating. As a practicing Buddhist, I really appreciated the emphasis on meditation. so much of what Hollenstein offers in the realm of paying attention to my body and what I eat never occurred to me. I am now noticing what I crave, what I am hungry for and the stories I tell myself about food. As a man, I did not find that most of the book is geared towards women off-putting; it’s clear that a lot of it applies to men as well. As a person who knows a few women, I appreciate the insight into just how deeply diet culture takes its toll…on women and, therefore, men as well!

As a person who has struggle with body image and related eating issues my whole life, I find this book invaluable. It is the most helpful, genuine and validating book I have read on the subject. I have highlighted so much that I am going to order another copy to have in my library. It is extremely well written, interesting to read and most of all is helpful. I felt the calming and peaceful vibe throughout. I have so many new awarenesses and as a result of reading Eat to Love and have had changes in my thoughts and behavior. It puts everything in perspective and is sooooo helpful.

When you give yourself permission to do anything, your life changes. This is what this book has done for me.This is very different from other "permission" books. Jenna has a way of writing that takes the truth you really unconsciously know about your self and gently infuses it into your consciousness. I no longer look at food as the enemy. I no longer look to "the experts" to give me advice about MY body. I no longer judge my body as something that must change in order to be happy. I trust myself to tell me what I need. Sounds simplistic, doesn't it? And it is. The new trust I have has overflowed into other areas of my life. And that is the most precious gift that I can ever give myself. The peace I feel is ... well ... startling. Every day is different. Every moment is different in our lives, and I am learning acceptance and non-self-judgment. There is no paranoia if I'm "doing it right", "what will other people say or think", etc. Every paragraph was a jaw-dropping eye-opener for me, and I cannot thank Jenna enough for having the courage and insights to write something so genuine and honest.There is Buddhist influence but it is not a "religious" conversion book. She skillfully incorporates the various tenants of Buddhist philosophy into an education about our bodies and relationship to food.Give yourself this gift of peace, trust and self love. You won't regret it.

I'm not even finished with this book. But I had to give a 5 star review. Recently I've been struggling with modifying my nutrition in a way that felt restrictive to me and I want to change. This book opened my eyes and give me ways to be at peace with trusting the way I feed my body. I eat very healthy, I eat small portions, I know how to fuel my body in the right way; I just need to not be so hard on myself. This book was my answer. I know I will read it over and over and recommend it to women I know.
