This is one of the best Battletech source books of all times. It a great place for someone just starting as well as any die hard fan. It touches on so many great points in Battletech lore: fall of the Star League, the Exodus, the Pentagon Worlds, second Exodus, fomation of the Clans, and civil war. Each section touches on the big events and leaves enough unsaid to allow authors (and gamemasters) to fill in the details. It touches on all the topics that pervade Battletech universe such as nationalism, betrayal, technological decline, the nature of charismatic leaders, and war. It details the entire military side of the Operation and allows plenty of great moments for a gamemaster to insert the players.
Brilliant, entertaing fluff on the early formation of the Clans. Catalyst has done a fine job. Contained within are several "Royal" Star League mech variants. If you are a hard-core fan, buy. If you are a casual player, you might not find it as interesting.
As a long-time Battletech fan, I was greatly excited when Catalyst Game Labs continued the "Historical" line for two reasons: 1) the Jihad Era story lines suck and ruined the wonderfully rich science fiction universe established originally by FASA, and 2) because of the rich history and detail of the Battletech universe, it is possible to play in other eras, and more detail on each of the eras prior to the horrendous Jihad can only be a good thing.Operation Klondike provides a detailed perspective of Kerensky's Clans at the moment of their creation and through their first triumphant battles. Each Clans motives, histories, and subsequent futures are established here. New BattleMechs are detailed. Like so many of other Battletech source books, Operation Klondike is FULL of rich and detailed information.When I received this product, I immediately began reading through it - the personality profiles of the first Khans of the Clans, the campaigns to reclaim the Pentagon worlds, the beginnings of the seeds that would flower into the Annihilation of Clan Wolverine. It's all here.
If you have any interest in the Clans, this is the book for you. It contains a detailed history section which spans from the early days of the Amaris Coup, through Aleksandr Kerenksy's Exodus, the Exodus fleet's arrival at the Pentagon worlds, the Pentagon civil war, the Second Exodus, the formation of the Clans, the planning and execution of Operation KLONDIKE, and the aftermath of the conflict. Then, each of the five planets' military campaigns are described in detail (although many details are left ambiguous for the purpose of scenario creation). Additionally, there are sections depicting the important personalities of the period, an overview (and planetary maps) for each of the Pentagon worlds, a summary of each of the twenty Clans, and a section of rules for scenario making, special abilities, and new 'Mechs (and their record sheets, which are available in printable PDF form directly from Catalyst Game Labs).My favorite part of this book is seeing the genesis of each Clan's "present day" quirks and personalities, such as learning why the Fire Mandrills are so divided or why the Smoke Jaguars were so brutal.Highly recommended for all die-hard Clan fans or for anyone who really wants to get in the head of their enemy and learn what made them what they are.
