About the Author
Kenneth L. Carder serves on the faculty of The Divinity School, Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Prior to his teaching ministry, Dr. Carder served as a United Methodist bishop in Tennessee and Mississippi.

Too many United Methodists have no clue as to why they are Methodists or why they believe what they do. This ought to be required reading for anyone contemplating membership in this denomination. Good, easy read.
Carder's 2009 book about Methodist beliefs is engaging and useful. Building chapter-by-chapter he educates the reader in the most critical elements of John Wesley's ideals, then very clearly explains how those ideals should be put to use in today's world. For the academic reader, each chapter also presents a bibliography of resources. For a study group, each chapter presents a short list of questions which can form the basis of reflection and interesting discussions.
Wow! Really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about the Methodist way. I read this for a class and now I can't wait for the class! I enjoyed it so much that I want to do more research on this topic! A+
I got this book for a class I'm taking and have read most of it now. It is clear and understandable, shows a great deal of knowledge and research into the beginnings of the Methodist belief system, and provides immediate references to assist the reader to go a step further or to validate a point. Not a history book, it still tells the reader how it all got started and how some people have let it become a bit warped or twisted. It does not have a negative tone, however. It does reinforce, re-state, and remind the reader what the core of the Methodist faith is, and how to live that core belief system. I took a membership class 20 years ago, and have attended Sunday School classes every year since then, yet this book encompasses all I have learned simply and concisely in a very understandable format. The questions at the end of the chapters tell me, in essence, where I might not have read carefully enough and I use them to go back and re-read sections.
Living Our Beliefs formed the basis for a United Methodist Lay Servant class which was most informative. Helped a seasoned Methodist learn more about her church, it's history and beliefs and will help in developing a class for new and older members of our congregation. .
This book is a powerful introduction or reminder of who we are as United Methodists...and the church universal. It is compelling to realize how we are living and are not living into our calling. Bishop Carder spoke directly into my heart. Thank you.
After being a Methodist for 14 years I decided to take a Certified Lay Minister coarse. This has helped me to understand what we are for and I will use this knowledge when preparing sermons.
