Anyone who does not believe addiction is a medical condition should read this memoir. Schemel details how the cards were already stacked against her being born into a family of recovering addicts. From there, we see her embark on her own Downward Spiral (get it!?) and back up again. To see what one will do to themselves as well as those around them is truly horrifying and heartbreaking.Whereas the bulk of the memoir details her addiction and relationships to those around her, there is also interesting information on the recording process and tour behind Live Through This and the start of the recording process behind Celebrity Skin as well as appearances from a few 90s heroes, some of which sadly did not survive the era.If you have seen the 2011 documentary by the same name, you'll have an idea of what you are getting into by reading this. The documentary serves as sort of an overview for the memoir, with the memoir adding layers of dark details to what ultimately becomes a story of triumph. In a Nutshell (aha! another 90s reference!), if you like Hole, this memoir is for you.If you were around in the 90s and remember the headlines and magazine covers (musically), this memoir is for you.If you remember what you were doing when Kurt said goodbye, this memoir is for you.If you like drummers, this memoir is for you.If you remember reading how Schemel came out in Rolling Stone magazine and you were struggling with your own sexuality, this memoir is for you.If you remember reading how Schemel came out in Rolling Stone magazine and you were not struggling with your own sexuality, this memoir is for you.If you want to learn more about addiction and its effects directly from the source, this memoir is for you.If you just just want a really great memoir with dark roads and happy endings, this memoir is for you.

Patty Schemel has written a deeply personal, intensely brave and beautifully illuminating book in which she explores her life as an A list drummer while simultaneously struggling with her own addiction and that of many of the people around her. It is a snapshot into the life of a touring rock musician in the throes of addiction, something rarely confessed so honestly by those who have lived through it. The impossibility of sobriety in the midst of the chaos of the rock lifestyle, it’s a world both romanticized and feared. And for good reason. She confesses in raw, often brutal truths. I’m grateful that she lived to tell the tale - and that she is able to tell it so well.

I couldn’t say enough good things about this book. I’ve been a professional musician for over 30 years and in recovery for 9 and this book hit me so hard (see what I did there) on so many levels. I didn’t know anything about Hole or Pat before I read this. I was part of a different scene at that time and super busy messing my own life and career up. I downloaded a sample that the kind folks at amazon “suggested “and was hooked after the first chapter. I feel like I owe her something for this. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Anyone would enjoy this and get more than a little something out of it but it’s a must (unsolicited advise, sorry) for any musician or artist in recovery.

I really, really enjoyed Patti's story. She was always a bit out of focus and in the background in the band (what can you do when you're the drummer and the frontwoman is Courtney?) so I was always curious about her, and where such a powerful badass sound came from.Honest, self- effacing, BS memories of her time before, during, and after the hurricane Hole. And for all conspiracy theorists - this actually sounds like what it really was like and what really happened. Much simpler and logical than all the BS they put out in all these years.

A hard look in to her personal world, but also a cautionary tale for those searching for self, identity, sexuality, addiction, detox, relapse and recovery. Also a look into the Seattle and overall music scene of the 90's: from the sex, drugs and rock 'n roll side, but also the cold, impersonal business side. She exposes the depths that some will go for a fix, and charts a course up the mountain towards sobriety and that daily struggle to maintain it. In it she says she now teaches drumming, here I say she teaches life.Truthfully depressing, but heroic in the end. Thank you Patty.

I've never read a book in 3 days ever! Party Schemel is my hero! She was the first woman I ever saw play drums. I was 14 when I saw her on MTV. I love this book. She broke my heart and made me proud while reading this book. She also taught me a lesson! That there is hope. There is a way out from drugs. I've been clean off hard drugs for 18 years.

Patty Schemel's honest account of her life has knocked me on my ass. All of the sudden, I'm flooded with memories of being in my 20s during Grunge's heyday, with the music and the people and the joyous celebration of being out and gay, and the drugs. We've lost too many wonderful and talented souls, but I'm so glad Patty made it through that hell to share her story. It really helps, Patty. Thank you.

Agree with others that this is a hard book to put down! You know she's going to come out okay but are still nervous as you follow her tale of going to the dark side. A worthy read for anyone interested in music, the 80s and 90s, and/or anyone affected by addiction (and that's most of us).
