In this book, written for ages 11 and up, you are given three options: to start out in the Sahara desert in Africa, in the Sonoran desert in North America, or in the Gobi desert in Asia. Depending on your decision, you are given a page number to turn to and start reading. From then on, you are given choices almost every step of the way; depending on the decisions you make, you either survive the desert or you don't.The storyline about the Sahara is rather sloppy. At one point, it randomly asks you whether you want to go towards the lights, when it hadn't mentioned anything about lights; at another point, it says to turn to a page, but the new page has nothing to do with what you had just been doing. That section seriously needs some editing.Other than that, the book is great. It's well-written and very informative. Even after you finish with the storylines, there's more stuff to read: a conclusion that briefly goes over survival in the desert, a section that tells about real survivors, and a three-question quiz to test your desert survival knowledge. Then there's a glossary and a bibliography.If it weren't for the problems with the Sahara storyline, I'd give this 5 stars; but as such, I don't think it's worth the money. Try some of the other You Choose books, like Can You Survive Storm Chasing? or World War II Spies.
I was educated with the way to survive in the desert. Good puzzle type book. Im reading the others currently.
Wow!!!! Even though I have never been to the desert, I feel like I have after reading Can You Survive the Desert? Reading it really made me feel like I was journeying through the desert.
My youngest daughter (age 10) is so into these books. She loves to make different choices within the books to see the various outcomes.
