I love this book! It’s so cute and funny and brings back memories of growing up in a mostly Jewish neighborhood on Long Island. However, one essential item was left off the list...MALLOMARS!! I will definitely by buying another copy for my daughter who lives Northern California. She’s in the midst of building a shop in Berkeley which will be recreating New York style bagels. The expats living out there are anxiously awaiting her opening.

I actually bought this for my young daughter! Her father is Jewish but unfortunately, she doesn’t have as much of a connection with his side as I hoped for. I’m not Jewish and admittedly a little uneducated about the faith. I’m hoping to at least help her learn a little about where she comes from and some of the culture. There’s great bits of info about Jewish foods with some warming anecdotes. So far we’ve made the matzoh balls and they were wonderful.

i loved this book, it was in my mailbox and i opened it and read it end to end non stop . i had a great evening rmembering and learning,. the little history lessons are wonderful. i will buy this book for many of my friends. best money i have spent in a long time.

I loved reading this book and hearing all the different voices and perspectives from so many fantastic Jews! There is so much information to soak up in here that is provided with lively and interesting writing that feels very current, while also rooted in tradition. I plan to get a few more copies to give to friends as gifts!

This book describes both familiar and unfamiliar foods, and each one is preceded by a brief article (a few surprisingly vulgar), and an occasional recipe. (I was very surprised that the apple cake recipe had both butter and sour cream, since every recipe I’ve seen uses the more traditional orange juice and oil.) I preferred the articles that offered some history of the item rather than a story about the author’s memory of the particular food item. (I had no idea that Bazooka bubble gum was started by four Jewish brothers, or that Sweet ‘n’ Low was created by a Jewish father and son.)

I love this book!! Even as a informed Jew, there are food items in this book I have never heard of, and I loved hearing about foods, new and familiar, from the incredible array of contributors! Can’t wait to try some new recipes.
