I don't usually do this, but I got home at 6:00 and read until it was finished - way past my bed time. Finished the book in one sitting. Nicely written from her perspective and she shares what she learned (whether she went in a particular direction or another). Very much appreciated the format as it was very realistic (what will I be bothered to do and what I won't be), detailed but not in the weeds, and I like the main goals she lists of sustainability - for your health, your wealth, and your soul. Her priorities are mine and that helped. I want to do better, but I also realize that I'm not perfect and will probably not do some of the things required for certain sustainable choices. Being realistic and honest with yourself ensures that you commit to what you can sustain - this ensures that you make the right choice for yourself. Every chapter was useful and down to earth. If you do this for a living, this book is not for you. If you are trying to educate yourself, then this is a great start. I know what specifics to provide my contractor and what to discuss with subs. I also know what I want to learn more about. Invaluable. Thank you for taking the time to share everything!
This book is clear, concise and so well organized. Most important, it is not just for people building a new home or renovating an older home. I’ve always wanted to make my home more sustainable home, but didn’t know where to start. This book motivated me to pursue some things I can do in my home to make it healthier for my family, and got me excited in general about the hope for a more sustainable future for our kids. We already replaced all of our light bulbs with LED bulbs. We are looking at triple pane windows and a filter system for our water. And I now insist on shoes off when the kids come home from school. Every homeowner should read this book, whether or not they plan to renovate!
clearly written with actual dollars and sense punch lines for making sustainable choices
Building a Sustainable Home provides readers with an excellent way to cut through all the noise and find out exactly what the best products and methods are for creating a sustainable home to live in, this applies to remodels or new builds. Schifman writes about going through the process of LEED Gold certifying her own home and takes that experience and relays it in ways you can understand. Insightful side bars invite readers to make choices based on your health, wealth and soul. Smart consumer friendly advice that will stand tall against contractors who are still very much on the learning curve with how to apply best in class sustainable practices. Get it right the first time with this useful book.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has plans to build a new house. The author does a great job organizing a lot of information into very manageable chapters and sections.
If you are considering new construction or a home remodel and you want your design and product choices to have the least negative impact on both indoor and outdoor environments, read Melissa Rappaport Schifman's book, BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE HOME. Very logically and clearly, Schifman takes you through the gamut of decisions you will be asked to make and gives detailed and practical (e.g., many discussions about costs vs. benefits, with the most expensive option not necessarily winning out) information for each choice, including water systems, HVAC, windows, landscaping (to name only a few). The writer, who has been through the entire process of building her own sustainable home, shares insider information I doubt you will find elsewhere. Particularly interesting is the running commentary throughout the book about adding up points for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.
I couldn't put this book down. I have been very familiar with LEED over the past two decades, with the perception that it was as nebulous and fragmented as ISO Certification (which took Aquathin two years to research, understand and achieve). Building A Sustainable Home IS THE best all-in-one How-To guide. It is a comprehensive, easy to read resource for LEED for Homes…and elegantly suitable to adorn any coffee table centerpiece. I especially appreciated the For Our Soul section, which LEED does not address. And I appreciated that the author points out that certification is not necessary to enjoy a safe, comfortable, relaxing home.
