This volume proved to be a good introduction to Seventh-day Adventism. Providing easy reading, it is fairly well balanced. A criticism that can be leveled against the author is that he falls into the trap of being American-centered. Given - as he demonstrates in figure 2 in the last chapter - that for a major segment of the history the church, the membership outside of the States is greater and that this gap will continue to widen, it would have been more relevant to the topic and title of the book if greater focus and attention could have been paid to the history outside of the USA.He is not alone in this shortcoming, as most Adventist historians do the same, e.g. Schwartz, Floyd and Greenleaf, Froom, etc.However, despite this shortcoming, it is a positive contribution to Adventist historiography.
The book content is probably fine, however be forewarned that the kindle version, as terrific as it is, does NOT contain any page numbers. This makes referencing and citations the book impossible, following along with others difficult, and reading assigned pages by your teacher impractical. Take my advice, if you are needing the original page numbers AVOID THE KINDLE VERSION and buy from Google Play Books - their e-reader does have the page numbers for nearly the exact same price. Sorry Amazon... my wife LOVES her Kindle, but not convenient for homework when you intentionally remove the page numbers.
George Knight always does a great job in his book. This book is no exception, as it is concise, and gives a good overview of the Seventh-day Adventist Denomination (of which I am a pastor). He breaks it down in to various periods of the church's growth, and gives a great understanding of the people who have contributed to the church, and how God has led a people to become a revelation of His character in these last days.
I chose this rating because it was easy to understand . The book was not voluminous but the necessary details of the Adventist church history were covered. Another advantage to reading this book are recommendations for further studyI recommend this book to all who desire to gain an understanding of the S.D.A. history.
This was excellent, it gave a good brief history of the church reminding us of the true calling of the Adventist Church. The author has clearly articulated the key points that shaped the history of seventh day Adventist. Onto the next book on understanding Ellen G white
It was a very interesting history of the Adventist church and was well written in a manner that kept my interest and I wanted to know more.
George Knight has written a good primer on the origins and history of the Seventh-day Adventist church. It is a good book for new members or anyone wanting to learn more about the church
